To make a change to your life you have to plan to make the change or it won't happen. Nothing great ever happens by accident. Nobody realises their ambitions without commitment to a strategy.

Use the following five D's to help you get emotionally involved with the result of your efforts. Write your five D's down in a contract to yourself. You should write your definition of what losing weight will mean - for example great looks, health, fun and so on. Have a clear-cut picture of who you will be and the lifestyle you'll enjoy when the excess weight has gone.

Desire (why you're doing it). This needs to be something that stirs an emotion within you. For example personal challenge, get out from where you are, you owe it to yourself to have better health, to prove to someone you've got what it takes, to take control of your destiny.

Dedication is a measure of how committed you are to a successful end result... It's really important to put specific time aside to do your exercises. Make an appointment with yourself to fulfil your future and keep to it.

When your friends see how committed you are, they won't expect anything else from you. Establishing your timetable helps you cope better mentally. You'll exercise all the better for it.

Drawing up a contract (even an unofficial one) illustrates your Determination to succeed. Every time you read it you re-affirm that you're doing the right thing. Finally, a Disciplined individual will have the strength to cope with set-backs. Obviously there will be knocks along the way, but a well planned regime will bring structure to your weight loss efforts.

Keep your contract close by, and take time to look at it regularly. Write down your goals in a specific and realistic manner, then work diligently and consistently to achieve them. This has been proven by the world's most successful people.
