Kids’ Rocking Chairs

May 12th, 2011

Comfort is very important to people, especially to children. I do not mean comfort as derived from a soft cushion or a warm, dry bed, I mean comfort as in security. It is the feeling that cats and children get from sitting in a box rather than playing with the gift that came in that box.

Or the comfort that some children derive from having their own special blanket, which is actually called a comforter by the majority of Americans. It is the type of comfort that all babies and all children get from rocking

Babies probably like being rocked because that was the sensation that they felt whilst mum was going about while they were still unborn. It is what mothers intuitively do whilst a child indicates its discomfort by crying and it is to be seen in many disturbed adults as well.

They rock back and forth in an unconscious mimicry of the feeling of comfort and security that they felt before they were born. Children derive comfort from any number of items. Some are commonplace others are peculiar, but two of the most well-liked toys for children are rocking horses and rocking chairs.

In fact, the desire to sit in a rocking chair or swinging seat never leaves most individuals until their dying day. We seem to get a lot of pleasure from rocking our whole lives long.

Rocking horses and rocking chairs have different functions of course. Rocking horses are for playing on and rocking chairs are for thinking and napping in. A rocking chair is a good idea for a child because it can learn to gain consolation for itself by sitting in its rocking chair and feeling good without the help of an adult. It helps the child gain an independence, a certain kind of maturity.

The only problem with children's rocking chairs is that children grow up and grow out of them so quickly. If you plan to have a big family this is not a problem, but otherwise you could be left with quite a collection of children's rocking chairs in the attic.

I say this because although you can sell one before you buy a new one, people find this very difficult to do in practice. They simply can not bear to part with the old one.

You can purchase an over-sized child's rocking chair so that you can get a couple more years use out of it, but in that case it is worth getting one with a fitted cushion or sticking some Velcro to the seat and a cushion so that your child does not slide off it.

Rest assured, you will never buy an unwanted or unused present for any child if you buy them a rocking horse, a rocking chair or a cardboard box.

The Baby Bedding Challenge

May 10th, 2011

Most individuals find that having a baby is a wonderful experience and they look forward to the glad event with great pleasure. There is a huge amount to learn on the subject of having and taking care of a baby, so the learning curve is quite steep on the first baby.

Parents get help with the birth of their children, but often they are left to discover how to take care of them by themselves. One of the items that you will have to think about while taking care of your new-born besides bottles, feeding, bathing and disease-control is bedding as new-born babies spend a great deal of time asleep.

Cot death is a worry for parents because no-one definitely knows why babies die a cot death. Therefore, the priority while choosing bedding is safety. Comfort is second, you still would like your baby to be comfortable in order for it to get a decent sleep.

Modern theory on cot death or SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) attributes it to overly soft bedding, so it is important to get bedding that is neither too soft nor too coarse. This relates to the mattress, pillows and blankets.

Overly-soft bedding may allow the baby's face to go down into it, which could cause the baby to suffocate. Even if the baby does not suffocate, it could cause the baby to breathe too much carbon dioxide for too long which might cause brain damage.

The first thing to look out for is the fit. The mattress, pillow and blankets should fit the width and length of the cot so that the baby cannot fall into a gap, which would impede breathing.

There are a number of kinds of baby beds and it is a problem to sort out which is which as a lot of advertisers use the terms indiscriminately. However, the terms are: bassinet, cradle, crib and cot. Some of these items have high sides to prevent the baby from getting or falling out and others can be rocked back and fore, normally from side to side.

The main thing to remember, whatever sort of bed you use for your baby is that all the bedding should fit it well. Being too large and curling up at the edges for the baby to squash up against is just as bad as being too small and creating gaps for the baby to fall into where it can smother.

Cotton is the best fabric to have the bedding manufactured from, because it is airy, it permits the baby's body to breathe. It is also easy to keep clean. One interesting thing here is that modern doctors recommend that the fabrics used for the baby's bedding should be patterned with bright colours.

What is the purpose of this? Well, the reasons are that children react better to primary colours (yellow, blue and red) and that patterns, such as flowers or animals, will give the child something to focus on, stimulating the improvement of the eyes, the brain and recognition.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

May 4th, 2011

If you are at all interested in either Pennsylvania or American history, you will certainly have heard of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the historic activities that took place there for the period of the American Civil War. The three day long battle that took place there in July 1863 was harsh and bloody, but was claimed as a victory for the Unionist North.

Even so, one quick look in the Union Army burial ground in the Gettysburg National Cemetery on Cemetery Hill will persuade you that the victory came at a very high cost. The cost in human life and human suffering was gigantic on both sides. Later on in the same year, Abraham Lincoln gave a discourse which was to become famous throughout the world as the Gettysburg Address.

These days, the Gettysburg National Military Park is a tranquil place, but it serves as a moving reminder of the battle that was fought, the strategies employed, the heroism of the combatants and the willingness of military leaders to sacrifice the common soldier for political objectives.

If you go to the Gettysburg National Military Park, you would do well to start your tour in the visitors' centre. There you will be able to pick up books, pamphlets and leaflets to help you orientate yourself when you are on the battleground, even if you are familiar with how and where the actual battle was fought.

If you think that it would be too much for you to work things out for yourself or if you do not have much time, you could join one of the regular guided tours. If you are somewhere in between these two positions, you could first watch a film in the Cycloarma Center, where there are also historical items recovered from the battleground on the numerous excavations that have taken place over the nearly 150 years since the battle at Gettysburg took place. If you do not look around the museum before you go on to the battleground, you ought to look later.

If you are visiting Gettysburg to enlighten your children about that most important era of American history, you ought to first check out the special interest programmes available to 7-12 year olds in the warmer summer months. One programme allows children to enlist in the army of 1863 for an hour in order to get a sense for what it was like for soldiers of the day and what it was like for the children that helped them go into battle.

Another programme consists of a story-teller recounting stories of what it was like to be a youngster in the days of the Civil War and the role that children played both in the war and in civilian life back then.

Gettysburg is a spellbinding place to go to whether your family was embroiled in the battle there or not. Many of the combatants' names and place names like Devil's Den and Cemetery Hill will already be familiar to you and a visit to the Gettysburg National Military Park will bring them back to life for you.

What Toys Will You Have To Have For Day Care?

May 1st, 2011

If you are going to be looking after children either your own or other people's, you will naturally have to have some apparatus. Your training will have taught you what you are required to have by law, items such as safety equipment, cots, high-seats and strollers, but you will also need some toys. Which ones though, there are so so many and they are not cheap either?

Well, the first thing to take into account is the age range of the children that you will have under your supervision. I am sure that your training will have already taught you that babies have different requirements from toddlers and so on up the age scale. Babies cannot move about (or not much) so they have to have their toys near at hand.

Having said that, babies are not even very dexterous with their hands. They only seem to want to stuff items into their mouths with them, so the safest options for babies are visually and aurally stimulating toys that will neither choke nor poison them. Twirling mobiles, colourful rattles, an attractive blanket, wallpaper with pictures of animals like Beatrix Potters menagerie of rabbits, foxes and ducks.

It is almost certainly better if you do not supply any toys that are going to be sucked and then passed around other children for fear of cross-infection. Let their parents provide the babies' own cuddly toys and teddy bears et cetera. You may like to advise parents not to purchase babies' toys which come apart easily or have buttons or loose eyes because of the risk of choking.

In the next age bracket, the struggling toddler, kids are starting to become curious and are 'into everything'. They still want to put everything in their mouths though, so the same warnings apply as before, but the playthings can and ought to be more challenging. Books with a thin storyline and big pictures are pretty useful as are fish tanks that are safely out of reach. Children love to see a busy fish tank and it is better than TV.

Building blocks and even the babies' form of Lego can be introduced at this age although the toddlers are still a little young for them. Toddlers will start to become attached to favourite toys and like to carry them around with them at this age, so soft balls, dolls, rattles, and educational toys suitable for the age group are good.

After about eighteen months, educational toys like blocks and Lego (or Duplo) are even more important, so are books, but children of this age like to bang things and create a noise as well. A plinky-plonky instrument like a toy xylophone or a plastic piano are good for fulfilling these needs.

After roughly two years of age, children begin to play with other children and Wendy Houses and toy tea sets are good for encouraging this. They will also like to move about and drive toy cars and tricycles. Children should be encouraged to play in a safe outdoor environment now as well, if the weather is suitable. Low-level swings and slides are fun as is a sand pit, if you can keep the local cats from using it as a public lavatory.

Mental Stimulation With Puzzles And Educational Toys

May 1st, 2011

The brain is a little like an engine, it deteriorates more rapidly through lack of use than regular use. There is nothing wrong with taking a bit of time out to simply sit and think, in fact this mild form of meditation is to be encouraged in our fast-moving world of hustle and bustle, but there is also a requirement for puzzles and educational toys that arouse the brain while still being quiet.

Puzzles and educational toys can actually be divided into two age groups - generally speaking: adult and children's games, although just where you draw the line between these age groups depends on the ability of the child. A bright child can start playing chess at eight, nine or ten, whereas that same child might not have a strong enough vocabulary to do crosswords until it is a teenager.

So, if you would like to supply adequate stimulation for a child, you could start off with baby Lego and continue adding to the set until the child considers it no longer stimulating (that is, no longer interesting) which could easily take ten years. There is also Meccano, which is for a somewhat older age group than Lego, but overlaps quite considerably. Fascination with Meccano can also last ten years.

Meanwhile, you could bring in draughts (checkers) and chess. You will have to decide whether Chess is too much for your child at the moment, in which case you can carry on with draughts and reintroduce Chess a year later. As the child grows into a teenager, the line blurs and teenagers may prefer adult games to children's games.

Adult puzzles and educational toys are fairly varied. Most hobbies could be called educational in some way or another, although for the purpose of this piece, I will stick with adult puzzles and educational toys that can be played sitting down, say on a regular journey into work or during the lunch break.

There is the Rubik Cube and numerous variations on the theme. Plenty of individuals find that struggling to solve the Rubik Cube when struggling with a difficulty, assists them solve the difficulty. Some say that this works by diversion.

Crossword puzzles are good for distraction and will help keep words that you do not use frequently on the tip of your tongue. Some people say that you ought not not look words up, but I disagree. If you look a word up in the dictionary a few of times, you will remember it and that has to do you some good.

Sudoku is a numbers game which is also played in a square like a crossword puzzle. Sudoku puzzles are rated on difficulty from one to five. One is very easy, whilst five is very difficult. They take a certain amount of lateral thinking and deduction to solve. They are very good because like a crossword, you can pick them up for ten minutes and set them down again.

If you like Chess or Bridge, these puzzles are also very useful for improving your game or merely helping you to maintain a degree of skill if you do not play so much any more. Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, Chess and Bridge puzzles can all be found in many of the quality newspapers, so you can keep up with the news and invigorate your mind with puzzles and educational toys at the same time by purchasing a good newspaper.

When Fear Is A Part Of Life At School

April 30th, 2011

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some kids hate every minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Often it is the clever children who are bullied for being swots and teachers' pets. They are safe and sound in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can be nightmares.

However, it is not only bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other reasons for fear in school as well. Occasionally, children think that a certain teacher does not like them and sometimes children are just frightened of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are frightened of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you ask yourself how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can become greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the children are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most insidious kind of fear in school comes from teachers who are scared of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their students. The regime of fear is exacerbated by over-sized classes. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of only so many pupils - as we all can in normal discourse. Therefore, if the class is too large, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this occurs, education suffers for the sake of keeping order.

For all of these reasons and more, many parents are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to educate their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to teach their children in a more conventional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can buy to give them a course of action on what to teach. There is also a lot of help available on the Internet. The problem facing any parents who wish to educate their own children is providing a rounded education.

People have a natural tendency to specialize in one subject or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools supply numerous teachers, so that every one can teach his or her favourite subject. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is difficult to teach maths if you have no talent for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the considerable decision to withdraw your children from school and educate them themselves

Music Lessons Are Great For Kids

April 29th, 2011

All parents enjoy it when their kids learn and grow in a variety of areas. They wish for their child to stay on track and have many more opportunities than they had when they were little. Learning music is important for all children. Music education has been shown to improve kids' performance in academic studies and other areas of their lives. This is true whether they become skilled at a particular instrument or if they just learn the basics, such as reading and making music. It helps them learn discipline and develop an appreciation for all arts. When parents are considering music lessons for children, they commonly ask what age is appropriate to begin these lessons.

The truth is that there is no one time that is right for every child. Most schools will offer some type of music class beginning at fourth or fifth grade, and this is a great way to get initial exposure. When they're ready, though, it's very beneficial if you can get them into private music lessons. But just when is the right time?

Start by evaluating how well you child is doing in school and finding out what their interest level in music is. If they are excelling at school, constantly learning, and incredibly interested in music or instruments, the time may be now. Starting it when they are enthusiastic and genuinely interested is much better than waiting until they are teenagers who are apt to balk and think it childish.

Communicating with your child is important too. To be successful, your child must take music lessons are seriously as they take their schoolwork. You need to let them know that upfront. Hiring a private music tutor is by no means inexpensive, and let them know that often. Discipline and motivation are essential to successful education in music or anything else. They must be ready and willing to study and practice consistently.

If you think this is the time for your son or daughter to start music lessons, it's time to think about which instrument they should study. If they have solid understanding of music theory and can read music well after their classes at school, they should be able to play any instrument they wish. Often a child will express a strong interest in a particular instrument, which will help with the motivation. If she's willing to consider more options, many experts recommend studying piano for at least a year before moving on to another instrument. This will give them a good groundwork to build off of.

When they do start, they will need constant support, and prodding encouragement. Help them practice consistently by setting up a schedule and an environment much like you do for homework. Helping them know that you are interested will keep them motivated and inspired to work harder and do more. Stay involved and talk to their teacher about how you can help. Like anything else worth learning, music takes a lot of time and effort.

As time goes by, you will need to stay observant of your child and how they are doing. If it turns out to be a huge struggle and something that they just do not enjoy at all, you may want to let them take up something else after a year or so.

The other possibility is that they absolutely love music and want to continue on. Either way, practice will sometimes be boring and they won't want to do it. Support and praise from you will help them get a lot of benefit out of music lessons regardless of how far they choose to take it.

You can find music classes in San Diego or anywhere. music summer camps Orange County can be found at this online directory.

Vitamin And Nutrient Supplements

April 22nd, 2011

We all know that we have to get all the vitamins that our body has to have in order to function correctly, although most of us do not know exactly what they are. We also know that it is better to acquire these vitamins and nutrients from our food rather than from tablets or supplements. Unfortunately, this is not always possible, so sometimes we have to resort to supplements.

Some people resort to supplements because the food that contains the vitamins that they are lacking is difficult to come by, a problem to cook or is too costly. This is why the provision of vitamins, nutrients and supplements is such big business, being worth billions of dollars every year.

Supplements come in three different types: liquid, tablets and capsules containing liquid or solids. Naturally, it is best to make sure that the supplement dissolves in your system before it passes through you, which is why the liquid kind is considered the best type.

However, some individuals do not like the taste of the liquid, which is where capsules containing liquid come in. They also happen to be the most expensive type.

Some people have a problem swallowing tablets and tablets are the kind that sometimes do not entirely dissolve. Before you buy your supplements there are a couple of things to check.

The first is to find out what the 'recommended daily amount' (RDA) of every vitamin and mineral is in your country. I say 'in your country' because not every country recommends the same amounts.

Then check the country of origin of the supplements. There are some countries I would not have confidence in, but that is your choice. It is worth being aware of though. It is pointless taking a higher dose than the RDA unless your doctor tells you to.

It is also not really worth taking a great deal less unless you are truly just supplementing the vitamins in your regular food intake.

While you have worked out your requirements you could go down to your local health food store to find the names and prices of manufacturers that can fulfill your needs.

Then go back home and check Amazon and eBay for prices of the same items. Shopping for supplements in this way can save you more than 50% on High Street shop prices.

If you are having difficulty working out which vitamins you should be taking ask your GP as your age, sex, degree of fitness and health can all have an effect on your requirements. One thing you must never do though is attempt to replace food with supplements.

You need both or rather you should take your vitamins in your food if at all possible. Vitamin supplements are only that - supplements to food, not replacements for it. Some minerals such as essential fatty acids like Omega 3 do not have an RDA in each country, so you should take private advice on these essential fatty acids especially DHA and EPA long chain essential fatty acids from fish oil.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of topics, and is now concerned with omega 6 and omega 3. If you want to know more, please visit our site at Omega 6 9

Online Dangers To Child Safety

April 19th, 2011

What is there to say about the world children live in these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is dropping its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our kids.

What makes it even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to prevent our kids from visiting websites of an adult nature. These days children are knowledgeable about technology and often more so than their parents. How can we keep our children safe from online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while still fighting the corruption that goes on in the world?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can protect our kids by monitoring their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will write only of the Internet providers I know about, since not all programs are the same. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will have to go to 'Safety' on the toolbar and click on 'Parental Controls'.

Once you arrive there, you will see a list of usernames available. Search for your child's username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on 'Edit Web Control' and then click 'Kids Only', and close. Now your child is protected against dangerous sites.

Chat rooms can be serious threats to children, since anyone can go into these rooms, and often predators frequent these areas, so as to entice children into a web of danger. In the AOL browser, click 'Safety' and then click 'Parental Controls'.

In the same way, click on the 'Edit IM Controls', 'Edit E-mail Controls', and 'Edit Chat Control' and complete the same steps as you did to instigate the 'Parental Controls'.

It is wise to install passwords. Having passwords will offer additional protection to your child. However, do not give your child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might also reset the controls.

It is also a good idea to activate your 'Popup Controllers' too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into 'AOL Safety' at the toolbar to start these popup controls.

If you use Internet Explorer; open a page. Click on 'Tools' at the top menu, then click 'Popup Blocker' and then click 'Popup Blocker Settings'. Read the details carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is the norm and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium, you could find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have met sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Further studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The studies say that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that around 74% of the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the sites did not issue adult content warnings. Another 11% of the sites did not have sexually explicit content warnings, and 25% mousetrapped the visitors, by not allowing them to leave the sites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. Protect your child now!
