Are Free Woodworking Plans Worth It?

July 10th, 2011

If you are going to create a stick of furniture, especially if it is fairly complicated or you have never made anything like it before, it is a good idea to get a set of wood working plans. These furniture plans are not dear and free woodworking plans can be found too.

However, it is prudent to be suspicious of free wood working plans as they may not be precise and you will have little recourse to protest if they were free or even pirated. Free wood working plans may be all right, but you do not want to find out that they are not half way through the task.

A good set of wood working plans, free or not, will give a clear exploded view of the item to be made and a narrative explaining the various steps and procedures. The plans may also make suggestions about the timber and tools to use, the length of time it could take to make in man hours and the complexity level.

If you want a large collection of wood working plans, there are CD's around which have 14,000 on them for $30-40. They are a good bargain. Other places you could search are online forums, the library and craft or DIY shops. Shops are probably the dearest option.

Once you have decided an object to make, you should consider which style you would like. A kitchen cupboard could be hardwood or softwood. It could be a Welsh dresser or a Scandinavian design. It could be modern, traditional, Georgian or Victorian, to name but a few.

Once you have answered these questions you can go looking for your wood working plans. You might be lucky or you may have to compromise if you cannot get just what you want. This is why I think that it is better to buy a CD of plans that have been sorted into a database, so that you can easily find out what is to be had in your collection.

You could search for 'kitchen cupboard' and 100 woodworking plans might recommend themselves to you. Or you could enter 'Victorian Welsh Dresser' and only get two recommendations. The point is that you will not be wasting your time chasing a pipe dream, when there are no plans obtainable for the exact object you are looking for.

When you have a set of suitable plans, I think that it is best to get them blown up, or maybe that is just because of my eyesight. However, it is a nuisance to have to remove your safety goggles to put on your spectacles every time you want to check a measurement. This is effortless from a CD because many printers have a capability to print poster size. If yours does not, take the CD to a printer's, an architect's or a technical office. They will be able to print A1 directly from the CC.

Then you can affix this enlarged wood working plan to the wall or an easel and you are all set to start making your furniture in style.

How To Go About Choosing Your Garden Furniture

July 8th, 2011

If you are going to take your garden seriously, there are a couple items that you have to do. This first thing to do is work out a plan of how you want your garden to look like. This is easily done using graph paper or the more artistic might select to draw it. Then you need to landscape your garden according to your plan, although you can adjust your plan as you go. After all, you are the boss. Put in any electric cables and water pipes that you might need. Erect your shed and greenhouse, if required then you can begin planting and start to choose your garden furniture.

The point of this article is to help you select your garden furniture. There is so much diversity of garden furniture that it can be quite difficult to make up your mind. Do you go for hardwood, softwood, metal or plastic?

Which colour and which style? Some of your choice will be restricted, if you are on a budget, but in reality, over the long term of twenty or thirty years, hardwood is the cheapest alternative and plastic the most expensive. Over the short term, two to five years, the opposite is true.

Whether you want armchairs or recliners is really up to you and so outside the remit of this article, so is the style that you prefer, although I will say that the most successful choice of garden furniture should blend in with the garden rather than stick out like a sore thumb. Plastic tends to look OK on a patio or deck, but rarely goes well with a garden full of pretty plants and bushes, whereas hardwood garden furniture tends to fit in well anywhere. You have to be a bit careful with softwood and metal.

In a way, it is a good idea to tackle choosing your garden furniture in the your same way that you would select the furniture for inside your home. It has to blend in with your overall style.

Therefore, you might want to put off buying your garden furniture until you get your first crop of flowers up, unless you can imagine it in your mind. The only problem with waiting for Spring is that that is when garden furniture is at its most expensive.

Ask yourself what you intend doing in the area where you are planning having your furniture. Are you and the family just going to flop there after work and on weekends or are you going to hold more formal garden parties there? If you are going to have guests, it should be large enough for the number you expect and the furniture should be robust enough so that it will not collapse under some of the heavier guests. If it is just for the family at least you are dealing with known information: how big they are and how many of them there are.

Another aspect to keep in mind is maintenance. Plastic does not have to be taken care of, but it will perish - become brittle - after a few hot summers and cold winters. You can lengthen the life of your plastic garden furniture by storing it in a shed when not in use. Metal garden furniture might need anti-rust treatment from time to time and if the seat is made of fabric, you should also check for signs of rot, which could lead to someone falling through the chair.

Softwood has to be treated with preservative, paint, varnish or oil fairly often and you should check for signs of rot or splitting, which can still come about no matter how much you take care of it. Hardwood garden furniture has to be treated once a year too, but it is by far the most robust material used for constructing garden furniture.

Plastic and metal furniture are available in many colours; softwood can be painted or stained any colour you like and hardwood comes in all shades of brown from light oak to rich dark mahogany, but it should never be painted only oiled and stained, if you want to.

If you select hardwood, it can be a bit hard on the backside after a couple hours, so buy a couple of cushions that match the colour and style of your garden furniture too. These can be stored inside when not in use or they will become unbelievably grimy and if they get wet it can take days for them to dry, during which time they might start to rot and smell. Removable cushion covers are a good idea.

Popular Wood Working Projects

June 28th, 2011

If you are a hobbyist who would like to start making items from wood, you may be wondering which wood working projects to try. Of course, the kind of wood working projects you select will depend on your level of skill, but there are so many items that can be made from wood at home, that you never need to be stuck for ideas, whatever level of expertise you are currently at.

Popular home wood working projects include clothes hangers, bird tables, wine racks, garden furniture and interior furniture like shelving, cupboards and display cabinets. Even teenagers can start to learn on simple projects building up their skill steadily. If you go for popular wood working projects, you will have no problem selling the items you make either.

Wooden objects for home and garden use are traditional and hard-wearing. People value them more highly than an item that has been stamped out by a machine or welded together on a production line. This applies even to something as straightforward as a swing seat. Everyone would choose the wooden one, even if it were a little more costly.

This is especially true of interior furniture like display cabinets. Whoever heard of someone displaying a fine bone china tea set in a metal display cabinet? The very thought of it is ludicrous, isn't it? So, if you want to decorate your home and garden well, you select items made of wood and so does everyone else. Therefore, if you want to sell the goods you make, pick popular wood working projects.

Hardwood is the best wood to use, but it is the most expensive and sources of many hardwoods are protected. This makes them scarce. Teak is one such hardwood that is scarce and very expensive, but teak furniture is one of the most highly valued by connoisseurs.

Whether you are just starting out or fairly experienced affects the sort of popular wood working projects you ought to embark on. Here are some popular wood working projects placed approximately in order of the expertise level need to complete them.

Garden swing seats always look good hanging from a tree in the garden. They are not hard to make look nice and they sell well. Bird tables go down well too. There are many different designs of bird table to choose from: with a little house or without, with climbing perches or not, with a hole for a bathing bowl or not, etc, etc..

Dog kennels are superb popular wood working projects. Every dog owner wants a kennel for their dog to sit in to take refuge from the sun, wind and rain, while it is outside. Dogs come in all different sizes, so you could make your kennels to order and they need not be of hardwood. Garden benches are not too tricky, but you can increase the style by making them more ornate and making them from soft or hardwood.

More competence is generally required to work on popular wood working projects for indoors, but you could start with made-to-measure clothes hangers or mug trees. Curtain rods can be as complex as you like too, but a set of matching curtain rods for a room of house would sell well. Wine racks are popular too.

Going up the scale of skill levels, you could make stools for the breakfast bar and even a kitchen table. Going further up the ladder of popular wood working projects, there would be a dining room table with six or eight matching chairs. The pinnacle of indoor furniture is the intricate, glazed display cabinet. That has to be superb, because people use them to show off their most highly prized items and they are being looked at all the time.

If you are interested in popular wood working projects like these, it is a good idea to acquire a set of woodworking plans for your project from a reputable dealer.

How To Buy Home Office Furniture

May 13th, 2011

Do you work from home? Or do you surf the Internet or buy or sell on eBay? Do you send and receive email? Obviously you do, because you are reading this article. So let me ask you, how much attention do you pay to the equipment you use to accomplish these tasks?

You might make certain that you have the latest and fastest computer, you may make sure that you use the provider of the fastest broadband connection available in your district, but how much attention do you pay to your computer table and seat?

If you do not pay attention to these details too, you are surfing at top speed but you could be heading for a bad back and other physical complaints at break-neck speed as well. If you work for a company, these details are taken care of for you, or should be and if your boss does not take care of your posture, then the company could be liable for compensation. If you do not have a supervisor and work from home, it only makes sense that you take care of these details yourself.

If you take part in any of the activities listed in the first paragraph, you certainly should be taking an active interest in ergonomics, which is the study of the correct way to sit and how to use the right equipment to help you to achieve the correct posture so that you do not subject your body to undue stress when you are working.

So, how do you go about acquiring the right table or desk and the right seat for you to do your work safely? Well, it is probably easiest to start with the seat. The correct seat for you will allow you to place your feet flat on the floor with your thighs parallel to the floor. You should be able to accomplish this position without teetering on the edge of your seat. If you need a foot stool to achieve this state, that is proper. The chair should have a back too. Some say there should be arm rests too.

The table or desk should be of the height that will allow you to sit on your chair and put your elbows on the desk comfortably with a straight back. The height of the table must not encourage you to stretch or slouch.

Once you know how high your table and chair need to be, you can consider size. In general, the larger the table or desk the better. However, you know what you are like. Are you the type of person who clears the desk at the end of every day, or are you the sort that works until you cannot work any more and likes to leave books and papers open for a quick start the next day?

If you are the latter type, then you require as large a desk as you can get, but you might just want a big desk because they are imposing. Whatever. It does not matter. A bigger desk is better anyway. The bigger the better, but it must be at the height that allows you to sit at it on a seat that suits the length of your calfs and the length of your abdomen.

Kids’ Rocking Chairs

May 12th, 2011

Comfort is very important to people, especially to children. I do not mean comfort as derived from a soft cushion or a warm, dry bed, I mean comfort as in security. It is the feeling that cats and children get from sitting in a box rather than playing with the gift that came in that box.

Or the comfort that some children derive from having their own special blanket, which is actually called a comforter by the majority of Americans. It is the type of comfort that all babies and all children get from rocking

Babies probably like being rocked because that was the sensation that they felt whilst mum was going about while they were still unborn. It is what mothers intuitively do whilst a child indicates its discomfort by crying and it is to be seen in many disturbed adults as well.

They rock back and forth in an unconscious mimicry of the feeling of comfort and security that they felt before they were born. Children derive comfort from any number of items. Some are commonplace others are peculiar, but two of the most well-liked toys for children are rocking horses and rocking chairs.

In fact, the desire to sit in a rocking chair or swinging seat never leaves most individuals until their dying day. We seem to get a lot of pleasure from rocking our whole lives long.

Rocking horses and rocking chairs have different functions of course. Rocking horses are for playing on and rocking chairs are for thinking and napping in. A rocking chair is a good idea for a child because it can learn to gain consolation for itself by sitting in its rocking chair and feeling good without the help of an adult. It helps the child gain an independence, a certain kind of maturity.

The only problem with children's rocking chairs is that children grow up and grow out of them so quickly. If you plan to have a big family this is not a problem, but otherwise you could be left with quite a collection of children's rocking chairs in the attic.

I say this because although you can sell one before you buy a new one, people find this very difficult to do in practice. They simply can not bear to part with the old one.

You can purchase an over-sized child's rocking chair so that you can get a couple more years use out of it, but in that case it is worth getting one with a fitted cushion or sticking some Velcro to the seat and a cushion so that your child does not slide off it.

Rest assured, you will never buy an unwanted or unused present for any child if you buy them a rocking horse, a rocking chair or a cardboard box.

Buying And Maintaining Farmhouse Garden Furniture

April 13th, 2011

Farmhouse garden furniture is otherwise known as rustic garden furniture and goes back to the olden days of farms and country living. It has a style all of its own and is quite distinctive. Generally, farmhouse garden furniture is coarse, massive and heavy. Occasionally it is roughly hewn, but that is not always the case although it is seldom carved in great detail. Farmhouse garden furniture is made to last.

Farmhouse garden furniture encompasses the whole assortment of garden furniture such as tables, chairs, benches, gazebos and arbours. Farmhouse garden furniture is customarily made of local timber, but can also be made of iron.

To compliment the garden furniture, there is also indoor furniture in the farmhouse style although this might be a bit finer, a bit less heavy so that it can be moved around for cleaning purposes.

Farmhouse garden furniture is usually manufactured from local hardwood such as oak, cherry, maple, mahogany, teak or beech, but in fact anything that is to hand. Softwood, such as pine, is cheaper, but it does not usually last as long as hardwood even if it is maintained regularly and as it should be.

Hardwood furniture can be stained, oiled or varnished, although it is usually best to just rub linseed oil into the natural wood. A little staining may help bring out the beautiful natural graining in the timber.

Softwood garden furniture is usually full of knots which many people find unsightly. If this is how you feel, then you can give the furniture three coats of paint in order to protect it.

If however, the knots do not bother you, you can stain and varnish it instead. In either state of affairs, all farmhouse garden furniture should be maintained every year in the autumn; that is whilst the sun is no longer at its hottest and before the rain and cold weather set in. The trouble with anything made of any timber is rot.

Hardwood contains more natural oils than softwood so it is better able to protect itself, but all wood stops producing these oils when you kill it by chopping it down. The oil on the surface is dried out by the sun and these dry patches then draw some oil up from deeper inside itself, but the further inside it has to suck the oil from the less it can draw, which means that eventually the outside becomes dry and then it will take in water.

When that occurs, rot has set in. Hardwood can last a couple of years before it gets to this sorry state, but softwood will perhaps last less than a year. This is why you have to seal the oil in and the water out with paint or varnish in the instance of softwood or replenish the oil by rubbing in linseed oil in the instance of hardwood.

You could paint hardwood as well if you want to, but most people purchase hardwood farmhouse garden furniture because it has a beautiful grain and paint would only cover up that grain. Decent farmhouse garden furniture is not cheap, but it is beautiful, a problem to steal and will last a lifetime if well looked after by a few hours maintenance once a year.

How To Select The Correct Office Furniture

April 11th, 2011

|When people consider acquiring office furniture they fall into two classes. There are the inexperienced who think that they have to go for functionality and there are the ones that have lived through that and opt for comfort and style.

It is not that these two ideas are mutually exclusive, but most buyers of office furniture instinctively think that they are. The fact is, that when a client walks into an office, first impressions count. No matter which business you are in this is a fact. However, office furniture ought to be appropriate to the station of the company using it.

It is equally as ludicrous to go over the top as it is to be stoic. This is not only important to clients and visitors (potential clients), but it is also vital to the self esteem of the people who work for them - the office staff need to feel appreciated and the people working for the company but outside the office need to feel proud of the company they work for as well.

Therefore, it is critical to get the correct office furniture in order to create the right image for your firm and it is essential to get the correct office furniture to create self-respect in your employees. But there is another aspect to why you ought to get the right office furniture and that is because the right office furniture will increase the effectiveness of your office.

Everybody will instantly realize that efficiency is the objective of every office. Efficiency means that the office can either reduce charges to the clients, which will obviously please them or the office can keep prices up to the industry benchmark level and increase profits for the owners. This is an important managerial decision the role in which the correct office furniture ought not to be underestimated.

So, how do you go about achieving this ideal office environment? Well, astonishingly for most people, the starting point should be the office chair. It needs to be ergonomic, which is another topic that I and many others have written about before. It is too much to go into here, just do a search.

When you have the worker seated correctly, the table should be at a height that is at least six inches above the knees. Most office employees like to have a hardwood table for prestige and this can be accomplished fairly easily even on a budget with a veneered table.

A decent alternative is a glass table. However, the glass table should be 'smoked' or tinted and definitely manufactured from toughened glass. The tint is good for modesty and because it looks more stylish and toughened for safety.

The table ought to be as big as feasible both for reasons of prestige and because a cluttered desk is maddening to work at. It is important to allow an office worker enough space to do the job well that they are there to do, which also affects their self-esteem and job-satisfaction. Raising employees' job satisfaction, which does not only include pay, is one of the best ways of raising office productivity.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a variety of topics, but is now involved with round glass dining tables. If you would like to know more, please go to our website at Solid Oak Dining Tables.

Television Beds Might Prevent Back Ache

November 16th, 2010

TV Beds sound like a luxury but they are aren't.Any platform bed is probably not for everyone, yet once you see the amount of benefits there are to buying a TV bed, you could just change your mind. Some great benefits of platform beds tend to be overlooked by those people who are looking for a fresh bed because they are accustomed to seeing a traditional spring/bed combination. Platform bed systems don't need this kind of setup.

The bedding sits on the podium, or hard surface of the bed, hence reducing the need for the lamp spring to provide stability. In actuality, this can be better for your back part because there are zero springs or vanes to cause you pain.

Some people can not get used to the notion that there is no spring under the bed, or they realize that the sleeping surface area is to hard. This can simply be fixed by purchasing any thick-sized mattress, or a mattress that has a pillow case upper surface. An individual will still be spending less because an excellent box spring can cost up to hundreds of dollars, so although you may spend a few hundred or so on an excellent quality mattress, you might be saving money in the end.

Do you have a smaller bedroom with minor storage room, or maybe have your outfits purchases gotten unreasonably out of control? Are you puzzled as to best places to put them? This is what helps to make the platform bed excellent. The room in the car garage consists of significant, roomy drawers for all your storage needs.

In case you don't need the place for clothing, you may use the drawers for any usages. Store linens, shower towels or bedding below, or you can even keep summer/winter months clothing so it won't have to be jam-packed away in the roof space.

The TV bed can become the particular focal point of one's bedroom because they are sold in a large range of colors and styles. They've got designs that range between simple, clean traces to intricate, curvy styles.

If you love to kick back while watching television, a TV bed has a remote controlled compartment that houses the television at the foot of the bed. You can learn more about this uniquely designed furniture, or buy a TV bed by visiting the website.

How To Select The Right Material For Your Craft Project

November 11th, 2010

Up until fifty years ago, the overwhelming majority of women knew how to sew. All the women that I knew as a boy sewed and knitted and made some of the clothes for me and my four brothers. When I was eight or nine, I and each other child in my class was taught the basics of knitting and before I went off to college, my mother taught me how to take up my jeans, sew on patches and repair my clothes.

Unfortunately, sewing, knitting and repairing clothes has largely died out in the United Kingdom. I now live in Thailand and I do not see much evidence of sewing or knitting here, so I assume that these arts are dying out all over the world among the masses, although I am sure that there are individuals everywhere who still knit and sew.

It is a crying shame. If you are going to make your own clothes or furnishings like cushions, pillows or soft toys, it is pretty essential that you select the correct cloth for the job. Using the wrong cloth will make your job more difficult and may even render your work pointless. So here are a couple of suggestions on choosing the correct fabric for the task in hand.

The first and most obvious thing to do is look at the suggestions on the pattern you are using and if you are a novice take that advice until you know what you are doing. Regrettably, a lot of people do not read the directions anymore. I can not remember the number of times I have seen someone struggling to assemble something and found the directions in the bin with the packaging.

Get to know fabrics by examining the fabrics in the shop. Ask questions about textiles and look at the fabric on the bolt or roll. If the fabric does not look right on the bolt it probably will not look right anywhere else either. When you unroll a couple of feet of the bolt, does it lie flat or does it roll up or crumple? Grab a handful and squeeze it. Does it crumple easily? Does it feel correct?

Is the cloth fraying on the bolt? If so it will fray while you use it as well. Look on the bolt for special cleaning or handling instructions. Do they suit your requirements?

It is quite difficult to work with satin because it slips easily. T-shirt knit is also difficult because it rolls up on itself. It is almost certainly best to avoid these fabrics until you acquire some experience

Cotton is the best cloth for beginners because it is easy to work with and everyone is very familiar with cotton goods. We know how they must feel and we can tell good, thick heavy cotton from cheap, thin cotton. We also all know that cotton shrinks. Therefore before you cut you cloth. wash it and cut the shrunken cotton fabric. In effect, you have pre-shrunk it.

How To Buy Or Make Cushions For Garden Furniture

November 8th, 2010

People who have garden furniture prefer to spend as much of the summer sitting in their garden as they can. For these people, the summer months are too short and so they spend every spare minute of fine weather enjoying the flowers in their garden and the good weather.

Some people eat in the garden too and it is also widespread practice to read the paper in the morning over a cup of coffee and a book or magazine in the evening with a drink on the patio as well. Depending on the type of furniture that you have, this can be pretty tiring for the backside, so it is a good idea to get a couple cushions to make your life easier.

If you do not have any garden furniture yet, you have the choice of plastic, metal or wood. Plastic garden furniture is cheap to buy, but it does not last a long time. Plastic will often only last for two or three years after which time it becomes brittle and breaks due to extremes of hot and cold.

Metal furniture looks better than plastic and can be more comfortable to sit on because it frequently has a fabric seat, but it can be a bit rickety and it looks so austere. I think that metal garden furniture should be avoided. Once it starts rusting, it looks awful as well.

There are two kinds of timber garden furniture: softwood and hardwood. Some softwood chairs, such as the deck chair or beach chair have a fairly comfortable fabric seat, but most softwood and hardwood garden chairs are hard on the backside after a short while. It is for these chairs in particular that you will need cushions.

If you are buying a new garden table and chair set, you might find that it comes with matching cushions otherwise you will have to buy or make your own. This is not difficult, but there are a couple of items to bear in mind.

The cushions are likely to get caught in the rain sometimes, so it is best to have them manufactured from materials that will not rot and will not hold water. The stuffing can be that non-absorbent fibre that you frequently find in cheap cushions. It is ideal for use in the garden. The covers should be removable and washable. Cotton or man-made fibre is all right here, because you can put them through the washing machine.

Waterproof material is not recommended because if water does get inside, you want it to be able to get out, not get stuck inside where it will turn stale. If you want to dry them in a tumble dryer, be careful about using some man-made fabrics that may melt. You also do not want to use a fabric that may shrink as you will be washing them often. The colours must be fast for this reason too.

While we are talking about colours, the colour or patterns of the cushion covers should be fitting for the colours around them. Please, give this a little consideration: it makes all the difference between great, average and awful cushion covers, but it is where you can express your personal taste.
