Crock Pot Cooking And The Summer Heat

July 12th, 2011

When the weather outside warms up, the kitchen can be a terrible place to be. There are lots of things you can do however, when it comes to cooking a nice home made meal that does not necessitate traditional stove top or oven cooking.

Learn to utilize some of the less heat-creating equipment in your kitchen, such as the crock pot, in order to truly overcome the summer heat and keep your cool while cooking a nice hot meal for friends and family.

So, how does crock pot cooking really help overcome the heat? Simply put, the crock pot in and of itself gives off far less heat when cooking than an oven or stove top. This is the first and possibly the best reason to make the most of the crock pot in your summer meal planning.

You should also consider the fact that by not heating the house by using your stove top or oven you are also lessening the load on your air conditioning (or other cooling methods) so you are not requiring it to work overtime in order to make up for the extra heat that other cooking methods introduce.

This makes crock pot cooking a win-win situation as the costs involved in using a crock pot are far less than the costs involved in operating a stove or oven. Whether electric or gas, your stove and oven are serious energy users. Add to that the fact that you are not increasing the temperature in your home by traditional means of cooking and you are using even less electricity.

Regrettably, the general consensus has been that crock pots are intended for comfort foods and hearty winter meals. The truth is that the crock pot should be one of your best loved and most often used cooking techniques. When it comes to cooking with a crock pot, the options are almost boundless. Almost anything that can be baked can be made in the crock pot and many, many more wonderful and enticing meals and treats as well.

Benefits of Crock Pot Cooking

In addition to the cost benefits mentioned above, when it comes to crock pot cooking there are many other advantages that are worth mentioning. For a start the bulk of the work involved in crock pot cooking takes place early in the day when you are fresh rather than at the end of a hectic work or play day.

This means that you are less likely to forget an ingredient or make some other slip-up, which can undoubtedly happen when trying to cook after a hectic day.

Second, many great crock pot recipes include the vegetables that make certain that we get the nutrients we require. So often, when preparing a meal at the last minute, vegetables and other side dishes are left out for the sake of speed. Crock pot cooking, on the other hand, is a meal in one dish.

Another good reason to use a crock pot for your summertime cooking is the simplicity of washing up. Unlike traditional cooking with a couple of pots and pans, most crock pot meals are completed in one pot. This obviously reduces the hardware needed to be washed up or loaded into the dishwasher (or if you are like me - both) afterwards.

So, you spend less time cleaning up, just as you spent less time slaving over a hot stove. Well, make that no time slaving over a hot stove and after the washing up is finished, you can get back to making the most of the sun set, mucking about with with the dog or kids, or just waiting for the first stars.

While there will never be a method of cooking that suits everyone, crock pot cooking comes pretty close. So, if you have a crock pot collecting dust somewhere in the back of your cupboard it is time to get it out, dust if off, and dig up some great summertime crock pot cooking recipes.

Tips For Bathing Your Cat

July 11th, 2011

Cats do not generally need bathing because their mothers teach them how to wash themselves while they are kittens. Moreover, cats have a justifiable reputation for not liking water too much. However, there might be occasions when you feel the necessity for bathing your cat.

For instance, your cat might be old or sick, have been in a bad scrap or be infested with fleas. If these times crop up, you will be glad of some tips for bathing your cat, as they can get fairly nasty about it, inflicting serious scratches that could get septic.

This first thing to do is gather everything you need in advance, because you will probably need to hold your cat down. So, you will want the shampoo, a flannel and a towel close at hand.

If you know that your cat is going to become difficult, bathe it in a bowl either in the garden shed or in the bathroom, where flying water will not cause much of a difficulty.

Otherwise, you could bathe your cat in a bowl on the lawn, but an enclosed space may make your cat feel less at risk and it will be easier to catch it in an enclosed space if it escapes your grasp.

If your cat really, really detests bathing and you have trouble holding it, place it in a pillow case with only its head sticking out. You can use a cat collar to keep the pillow case in place.

If you use a pillow case, wash your cat through the pillow case as you would a delicate, costly woollen pullover. Use an old collar, because otherwise you may wash out the pesticide that is impregnated in it.

If your cat's fur is matted or clotted with blood, you had better remove the clots and cut away the hair with the cat on your lap before you begin bathing it.

While preparing the bowl, put a non-slip mat or towel in the bottom and just half fill it with luke warm water. The shampoo ought to be mild. In fact, you should bathe your cat as you would a baby who does not like getting soap in its eyes.

Lower your cat smoothly but quite swiftly into the water and talk to it reassuringly all the time. It will probably hate what you are doing to it, although some breeds are fairly happy to be in water. Yours almost certainly will hot be though and it will become more than a little afraid, so keep talking to it.

Wash quickly and do what you can. It is better to get most of the work done the first time round and have to come for a second go later than to actually stress your cat out with a long session and who knows, it may get used to it after recurring sessions, if they do not last very long.

When you are through, wrap the cat in a towel and be nice to it. If it is in a pillow case, wrap the towel about the pillow case and take it off under the towel. When your cat is pretty dry, you can let it go if it wants, because it will dry itself off anyway.

How To Plan A Private Party At A Day Spa

July 10th, 2011

Are you thinking of holding a party? It may be a birthday party or an anniversary for yourself or a friend or it could just be because you want to have a party. Pool parties are fantastic in the summer, but then, not everyone has a pool and it is not always summer, is it? Did you know that lots of spas will allow you to hold a party on their premises?

That would be great too, would it not? Having access to the heated pool, the hot spas and Jacuzzis, the steam room or saunas or Turkish bath. I am not sure that I would be keen on working out at the gym at a party though! A stomach full of cake and lemonade would not work well whilst working on your abs.

If you are keen on holding a party at a local spa, the first thing to do is find a local spa that allows the holding of private parties. This is simple enough. Most spas will have a web site which has all the facilities listed on it. So either do a search on the Internet for 'spas in xxxxx', where xxxxx is the name of your town or look under spas in Yellow Pages and then use the names to look for the web sites.

There are a few items that you have to check next, but first make a list of what facilities you would like to enjoy at your party. Do you want it to be private or open to all? Do you want to allow children in? Does everyone have to dress the part or can individuals (older individuals perhaps) wear street clothes? Is alcohol accessible and can you take drinks into the jacuzzi?

Once you have your list of needs and suitable dates, you are in a position to look for fitting locations. Once you find the nearest fit to your requirements, phone them up and see if they will permit all your needs. It may not be a problem for them.

How many people are going to be at your spa party and who is going to pay? Well, it depends on the party actually. Say a bride-to-be wants to go to the spa with her bride's maids before the wedding; the bride should pay.

What if five friends start a night on the town at the spa? Everybody pays their own way.You can discuss a discount at a lot of spas if more than five or six people attend as a group, but that discount might not be large.

A spa party is a fantastic day out whatever the reason for the party, and they are very adaptable. You could hire the whole spa for two or three hours for mum's fiftieth and meet up in the bar afterwards or you could use the spa party as a precursor to going on somewhere else. One thing is for certain, you will feel at your best and up for anything when you walk out of the spa party.

3 French Dip Sandwich Recipes

July 8th, 2011

French dip sandwich recipes are very well-liked. The French dip sandwich was invented by accident by a Frenchman, but he was not living in France. He had emigrated to the United States and was living in Los Angeles. Philippe Mathieu had opened his sandwich bar and delicatessen known as 'Philippe The Original' on North Alameda Street in 1908, but the Eureka moment came ten years later when a policeman came in to buy a beef sandwich.

Philippe unintentionally dropped it in the tray in which the beef had been cooked, but served it up anyway. The policeman came back with a few friends the next day to try the 'dipped' sandwich and the French dip sandwich was born. The sandwich bar is still there and still making French dip sandwich recipes nearly 90 years later.

What Is A Memory Foam Mattress?

July 6th, 2011

Have you ever heard of a memory foam mattress? Memory foam has in fact been around since 1966 when it was developed by a team of NASA scientists, who were looking for ways to make aircraft cushions safer. Therefore a memory foam mattress is a mattress manufactured from this space age foam, although modern memory foam has been hugely improved since those early days. The difficulty with the early foam was that it was too brittle, so it crumbled within a couple of years.

Nowadays, memory foam will conform to a body's shape by reacting to a combination of body weight and body heat depending on the density of the foam. One of the first uses of memory foam was in hospitals where it was found that memory foam could ease pressure on the parts of the body coming into contact with the foam, which reduced the occurrence of bed sores and gangrene in long-term bed-ridden patients.

The first memory foam mattresses were very costly and only institutions such as hospitals could afford them. However, over the last twenty years, the price of memory foam has fallen radically and so these super mattresses are now within the grasp of almost everyone who needs or wants them. There are options to the traditional memory foam mattress as well, there are memory foam pads and cushions and pillows too.

The use of this special foam has flooded into other areas of our lives as the price of it has dropped. Memory foam is now used in car seats, wheelchair seats, kids' high seats, earplugs, gloves and office furniture. In fact, this new foam is now used to produce many items that have to be worn or used for long periods of time - golf gloves too for instance.

Although the cost of these memory foam mattresses has dropped significantly they might still be too costly for everyone in large families to have one each. In this case you could go for mattress toppers which are otherwise called mattress pads. These are meant to be laid on top of the mattress but under the bottom sheet. They are less expensive because they are normally between two and four inches thick.

However, be cautious of cheap toppers because any foam memory foam topper that is thinner than two inches thick is prone to be useless. Likewise, bigger is not always better, because some individuals find memory mattresses that are over six inches thick are too hard to sleep on.

Check the warranty as well. Some high-density mattress pads of two inches thickness will crumble within a couple of years, so a two year guarantee means that you will get at least this length of time out of your memory foam mattress or mattress pad.

Expected Levels of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressure

July 5th, 2011

The real order that the numbers involved in a blood pressure reading are given is systolic over diastolic. The systolic pressure is higher, because it is the reading taken when the heart actually pumps or beats and the diastolic pressure is lower because it is taken whilst the heart sucks in a fresh quantity of blood to pump around.

There are approximate figures that people quote as 'standard', yet there is no clear, authoritative consensus what these numbers are. In the west, most authorities will say that any reading under 120/80 is good. However, there are numerous medical professionals who will say that 140/80 does not need treatment, other than to lose a couple of pounds, if you are over weight.

This makes it very difficult for the unqualified person to ascertain for him or herself, whether his or her blood pressure is satisfactory or not. Blood pressure monitors are very reassuring, very accurate yet not expensive these days, but how can you interpret the data they give you, if not every medical professional has the same opinion?

Perhaps the only way to get the most sense of this data is to go along to your general practitioner with your blood pressure monitor and talk about its findings with your doctor. Your doctor can use his or her sophisticated device and check it with yours then your doctor can give you a few figures that can be expected for someone like you.

I say this because there are a number of things that can affect blood pressure. In fact, actual blood pressure changes with every beat of the heart, so your blood pressure can be different every time you take it, which is why a BP monitor takes the average (or the maximum) over, say, a two minute period.

Factors that can (and often do) have an effect on blood pressure are:

The 'White Coat Effect': some individuals' BP soars by as much as 25-50 points if they go into a doctor's surgery. This could be anxiety or it could be fear of doctors, and it is a documented difficulty.

Mood: fear, anger, depression and anxiety can unsettle your blood pressure.

Age: your age has some sway on your BP.

Weather: the temperature and the humidity has an effect on BP

Stress: stress, restlessness, lack of sleep and tiredness can affect the levels of your blood pressure.

Diet: which foodstuffs and beverages you have recently consumed have an impact as do whether you are constipated or merely 'full'.

Smoking: smoking and drinking alcohol have an impact on blood pressure.

Exercise: your physical condition, your metabolism and the amount of exercise you take are also factors.

Time of the Day: for all the above reasons and more, the time of the day that you take the reading has an impact, which is why it is a good thing to have your own blood pressure monitor at home. Then you can measure your BP at definite times of the day and compare the results with the hoped for levels of diastolic and systolic blood pressure given you by your GP.

Narcolepsy - A Rare Sleep Disorder

July 5th, 2011

Narcolepsy is a fairly rare sleep disorder, which causes sufferers to fall asleep at any second of the day whether they are weary or not. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder, meaning that the brain sends orders to the body that it is exhausted and ought to go to sleep immediately and the body obeys whatever it is doing.

Attacks of narcolepsy most often occur while the sufferer is doing something quiet, like watching TV or reading, but it can also occur when eating or driving, which is of course extremely dangerous. Some people fall asleep in the middle of a chat or at work in the middle of a job.

As with a number of other disorders like restless leg syndrome and sleep apnoea and even snoring, it is not usually the sufferer that is first aware that he or she has a problem. Very frequently a spouse or colleague is the first to alert them to their condition and frequently it take quite a time before they will believe it and even longer before they do anything about it.

There are five indications of narcolepsy, but not all sufferers will suffer all five of them: daytime drowsiness, broken sleep patterns (a kind of insomnia), sleep paralysis, hypnagogic hallucinations and cataplexy. If you have any of these indications, you ought to get yourself checked out, in case you too fall asleep at the wheel or while carrying out a dangerous manouevre in work.

The first and most obvious symptom is daytime drowsiness. Victims of narcolepsy might have the irresistible urge to go to sleep during the day five or six times or more. Narcoleptics call these 'sleep attacks' and say that they last for from five to ten minutes each.

Broken sleep patterns are not a ideal means by which to judge as many people suffer from insomnia for other reasons too.

About half the sufferers of narcolepsy experience sleep paralysis, which is when the sufferer can neither talk nor move for a number of minutes just before falling asleep and slightly after waking up. It can be very frightening for the narcoleptic and the family.

About the same percentage suffer from cataplexy, which is the loss of muscle control whilst awake. The bouts of cataplexy occur usually for short periods of time during episodes of great emotion. For instance, when the sufferer is very angry, very glad or very emotional. Occasionally, the sufferer falls down and goes limp - it looks as if they have dropped asleep, but| they are totally awake and fully conscious.

A hypnagogic hallucination happens just before sleeping or and slightly after waking up and involves seeing incredibly vivid images or and hearing incredibly lifelike sounds.

These experiences are often accompanied by sleep paralysis and most sufferers find them very frightening. Normally, the sufferer cannot distinguish between this hallucination and reality during a bout.

There are other symptoms which transpire occasionally such as migraine or headaches and 'automatic actions' which are not quite right, like putting books away in the fridge or writing off the edge of a page. Narcolepsy can be treated with pills.

Owen Jones, the writer of this article, writes on many topics, but is now concerned with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. If you want to know more, please visit our web site at Sleep Apnea Surgery Techniques

What Are The Symptoms Of Ovarian Cancer?

July 5th, 2011

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are fairly problematic to recognize regrettably. This is because they are similar to the indications of regular menstruation or menopause that many (or most) women experience frequently anyway. The chance that women who still menstruate have, is if they notice that some of the regular feelings are not quite right.

Menopausal women have a bigger problem because they are new to their condition and it is so unpredictable anyway. The symptoms of ovarian cancer include: abdominal pain, a feeling of being bloated, twinges and tiredness.

That is why it is so difficult to use these symptoms as predictors or ovarian cancer. However, if you have these indications at a time when you would not normally do so, or if they last longer than usual, then it would be worth checking with a doctor or your gynecologist.

If you are concerned, obviously, you will have to have a check up, but if you are 'umming and ahhing', attempt to find out whether someone in your family has had ovarian cancer before. There is a tendency for it to run in families, but that is true or most types of cancer really.

However, if you are looking into your family's history of cancer, remember that cancer can out itself in different forms. for example, a man naturally cannot get ovarian cancer, but if your dad passed away of cancer you have an increased chance too, albeit it in possibly another kind.

Age is another issue in the likelihood of someone having this form of cancer - the older the more likely to be expected. There is also another bizarre twist here. Women who have had a number of children are least at risk, women who have chosen not to have children are more at danger, and women who have always been incapable of having children are most at risk.

The fact is that this is such a difficult form of cancer to home-diagnose that it is hardly worth the effort. You have to listen to your body and trust your gut feelings. If things are not the same as you are used to, go and have a check up as soon as you can.

Apart from that, go for a ordinary check up anyway. Different countries have different recommendations, but whatever advice that your doctor or gynecologist gives you, you should follow. Ovarian cancer can be treated successfully and not only that but if it is caught early enough in young women, treatment does not necessarily mean loss of fertility.

So, the watchword is do not miss your check ups. Almost 75% of women who are diagnosed early can expect a complete recovery. Young women have an even higher chance than older women, which means that older women should go for check ups more often than younger women.

Do not be apathetic about this form of cancer even though the symptoms of ovarian cancer are not simple to recognize, in fact that is a very good reason for you to let an expert check you out. The tests are not invasive and consist of merely a blood test and an ultra sound scan.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of topics, but is now involved with the stages of ovarian cancer. If you would like to know more, please visit our web site at Signs and Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
