Interior Design

July 26th, 2010

Redecorating your house really isn't that easy and it only gets even less so when you are stumped for ideas. The only real way to get over this shortage of interior design ideas, is to sit down, put your feet up and have some tea or coffee.

I'm not kidding, there's no better way of getting a new perspective on things than taking a break from what you are doing. In the first place, you become more relaxed, and in the second place a steaming cup of tea or coffee is always welcome.

Once that you're resting comfortably and are suitably relaxed, shut your eyes and get a mental picture of the room that you want to redecorate. Even if you are redecorate more than one room, it's always a good idea to begin with one room first, working your way logically through to the next one and then the next one.

Also, before you start on your journey through the maze of interior design ideas, keep a notebook and pen at hand so that you can write down any inspirational ideas you have before you forget them.

So, simply lie back and imagine the room in your mind. Try to see it as you want it to look. And if that's too difficult, first try to replace separate parts of your room or articles in it. This is always a good method of working. But, if you've still got a mental drought on interior design ideas, look through some interior design catalogues beforehand so that you have at least some basic ideas of what you can do to change your room.

The interior design catalogues don't need to be anything more grand than your free local department store catalogue, turned to the home furnishing section. Then again, nowadays you also get specialist shops which deal only with the redecorating of your home. If you have the time, a quick trip down to one of these might also help to end the dearth on interior design ideas, and can possibly get you started.

These stores will have decorated sets of several designs, offering you a good idea of what your room can look like if you bought those materials. However, if you're going to go to one of those shops, expect to shell out some cash, because no matter how much you try to keep a tight hand on your pocket, you'll always find something you want to buy.

This is not always a bad thing, but unless you watch out you could end up buying things you don't really need and without a proper idea of what you want the room to look like, it can prove to be disastrous. Don't worry though, just keep your goal in mind, you can go back home and get a start on redecorating your rooms the way you want to.

Furthermore, now that you've been able to get a few interior design ideas of what you want your rooms to look like, your whole redecorating project ought to be that much easier and that much more fun too.

Decor For Teen Rooms

July 19th, 2010

Teen rooms are the bane of mothers everywhere. It's not even like when they were pre-teens. In those days, if their rooms were in a mess, you could shout at them and get them to clean it up, and, if that didn't work, you could go in and do a good job yourself. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you're dealing with something completely different entirely.

True, you could go and ask them to clean up their rooms. And true, you could shout at them a little if you wanted to, and go and clean the room yourself. However, that's when all hell breaks loose. Teen rooms are sacred places and not to be entered into lightly.

Heaven help the person who dares to clean up even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be what most teens will argue, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes skywards and explain that the pizza and three-day-old shirt thing just don't go well together and you were just rescuing them from impending disease.

Your teens will in turn roll their eyes and protest loudly, that no it wasn't about to grow legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn't that be a great science project. You keep cleaning and they keep putting things back. End of story, and you're basically right back at square one.

Of course, one way that you could deal with this catastrophe is to redecorate. Teen rooms might be sanctities of peace for them, but even they would love it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That doesn't mean that the room will be any cleaner once they've moved back in, but at least you'll have seen the inside of the room long enough to satisfy you for the next few years. That is unless you're thinking of redecorating their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are notoriously different when it comes to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated quite differently from what you expected and what you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise should be struck, if your teen wants black for his room, then say you want another colour too that will offset the black.

Be prepared to give in a lot on your ideas no matter how silly their ideas seem to you. After all, they're only a teen for a while and later on they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had had.

It is your duty as a parent to allow them these moments in their lives that they can look back on with mock horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

Ideas For Painting Walls

May 27th, 2010

Here you are then, standing in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though because the vendor was in a hurry to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. Still, you don't really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect opportunity to do your new house up exactly the way you want it.

But now you need to decide where everything goes and what colours will suit your rooms, but you still don't have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly sort out your new keys and wander through your new house. The minute you step in through a door ideas assail you. That huge urn you bought a year ago would look fantastic in the corner, and you're pretty sure that your existing sofa set will fit in this other room. And you know the antique mirror table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really get hung up on though are wall painting ideas.

You definitely don't want to just dab on a few coats of bland paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look on with pride every time you see it. And, of course, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn't be too severe.

But where can you get some good wall painting ideas from, and how do you go about getting the wall painting done? There are a few ways that you could go about it. The easiest being if you have an artistic streak in you, then you could always get your wall painting ideas out of your head, so to speak and paint the walls as you see fit. Unfortunately, most of us aren't very artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this case then, you will need some help.

You could start off by hiring a professional interior designer to help you decide what would look good or you could sit down and watch some DIY programs on the TV, where they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when decorating a house and will even give you some great wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is suitable for you, you might just try going down to your local hardware store with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their assistance on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You might come up with a mixed bag of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I'm very proud of my slightly eclectic house. It reflects who I am just perfectly.

How To Decorate Kids’ Rooms

May 12th, 2010

If you're bored with the way your home looks one of the best things that you can do is to redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this can lead to headache upon headache for you and is almost guaranteed to bring stress into your life when you really didn't need it. However if you start room by room, your redecorating project will become that much easier and simpler to manage.

The next stage is to decide which room you want to decorated first. It's not always an easy decision to make, but it must be done nevertheless. How about beginning by decorating the kids' rooms first as this will lead to a general mood of happiness in them and can even help you in the long term too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass the time and also gives you the opportunity to bond with your children as well. There's no better way to get closer to your children than by getting down to their level and talking about things that interest them. Decorating their rooms might be the perfect way to do that.

But where do you start? If you've more than one kid you need to be careful about whose room you're going to decorate first, as things can get tense. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don't handle it delicately, so I've found that the best way to deal with it is to flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out heads or tails.

This method might not work however if you've got more than two children or more than two rooms to decorate. In which case I'd suggest you just wade in and start the whole decorating process at once instead of tackling it room by room.

But at least you're not doing the whole house and this way you encourage happier feelings amongst the children with no-one feeling that they have been slighted by having their room decorated last. What tends to happen when you're decorating the rooms with the kids' help though is that more paint gets splashed everywhere but where it should be. But then that was part of the reason you decided to start decorating the kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas first, wasn't it.

You'll be all the happier for at least starting on your decorating project and your kids will be happier for having their rooms redone, not to mention the sheer fun you'll be having whilst doing all this. This isn't of course to say, that decorating kids rooms isn't hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you'll probably get a boatload more stress by the time you've finished, but at least you'll have had the satisfaction of getting closer to your children and seeing their rooms tidy for at least one day before they move back into them again.

Decorating Ideas for Inside the Home

April 24th, 2010

The coldness of winter has got hold of you and you're pfaffing around trying to decide what to do with yourself. You're snowbound and the only thing that you can think to do is sit in front of the fire, drink your steaming hot mug of chocolate and stare broodingly out of the window. The only problem with that is, you've already done that and you've have had your fill of fires, hot chocolate and brooding.

Now you're itching to do something different, so, you turn to the only comfort you have and switch on the TV. You're instantly captivated by one of those numerous shows about how you can do up your home. You find yourself flooded with decorating ideas: ideas on both interior decor and exterior decor.

So, you finally find yourself entranced by something that you would have dismissed earlier and jump out of your seat to get a pencil and notebook to write down all those great ideas. Before long, you've run out of room in your notebook and have to leave your comfortable chair to go get another one.

Before you get back to your comfy chair, you've made a quick detour around the house and have spotted many of the things that you've spent a lifetime trying not to see - the cracks in the bedroom walls, the patch of mildew in the bathroom, the paint chipping off many of the doors.

The list is endless and could go on for many pages. So you dutifully sit down, and alongside your notes on various decorating ideas on interior design and general refurbishing, you meticulously take down all the little things that need fixing, replacing or refitting.

The list covers more than even your second notebook can hold but you decide to stop there, because it's more than your arm can take to continue writing, besides you already have all the pertinent facts at your fingertips, so now you set about sorting them out into sections that you can easily follow.

No easy task that, when your decorating ideas, interior designs and room-by-room list of flaws is all jumbled up into one horrible pile. You then turn to the tried and true, age-old method of sitting on the floor and surrounding yourself with your notes in an attempt at finding some order.

When you eventually reach that sublime state of order, you sit back with a tired but happy smile on your face. The knowledge that you'll now have enough decorating ideas and interior design plans and less spare time on your hands during those long hard months of winter, sends a gush of contentment flowing right through you. After all, there's nothing like a job well done and the knowledge that next spring, your home is going to look nothing like its former shabby self.

Kitchen Decorating

April 19th, 2010

It's a Saturday morning and you're sitting in the kitchen waiting for your coffee machine to finish its various gurgles and noises, so you can drink that all important early morning cup of coffee. Idly, you look around your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago, but you never really paid any attention to it until now.

You continue to allow your gaze to wander and your eye spots a patch of mildew seeping in under the sink, then you see the ugly brown colour your ceiling has turned right above where the cooker stands.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the lone wall-papered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that some kitchen decorating is called for.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get started? Now that you've finally spotted all the signs of decay that you had been quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can't wait to start your little kitchen decorating project.

However, that is where the crunch comes. Just how small do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with just slapping a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the lengths of removing the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out what had caused that mildew stain.

Sure enough, it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you'll probably do better, in the long run. to get rid of all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you're going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you'll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they're also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go on and splash out on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you're about it, you might want to think of buying a new set of tea towels as well. It doesn't hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you're finally done, you can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You'll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has landed you with a better kitchen than you ever expected.

A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn't get any better than when you're enjoying the fruits of your efforts and labour.

South-Western Home Decor

April 13th, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you get it into your own home? Well, to begin with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its best traits. Southwestern home decor uses colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you can even find great kitchen accessories as well.

If you're thinking about bringing southwestern home decor into your home, first of all, you have to check whether it will blend in with your existing decor or whether it will clash badly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these lovely pieces you can do one of two things. Firstly, you could always just throw out every single piece of ratty and unwanted furniture that you already have and replace it with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match it selectively to your existing knick-knacks.

Personally speaking, I would rather replace everything I have since there's some wear, but in the real world that's just not possible. For one thing it would just be too expensive, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about extravagance. I've discovered that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

Besides, I'm also a little relieved that I didn't give into my first impulse and redecorate all in the southwestern home decor style. Granted that it does look great, but sometimes I also like the peace and quiet that some of my other pieces of furniture bring to in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the ideal solution and have instead decided on buying one-off pieces that catch my attention and sprinkling my home with those instead.

And I have to admit that its made quite a difference in the look and feel of my whole home. Expensive pieces of the more traditional furniture now rest quite comfortably with the more vibrant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I've even got hold of a great throw rug for my bathroom floor along with a gorgeous set of bathing towels. My kitchen has a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most amazing lampshade and statue in prominent view.

Though all of this might sound too much, I've found that this is the best way to bring the glories of southwestern home decor into my life, without going all out and replacing your entire house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you only want to bring a little of southwestern decor to your home, not the whole sheebang. Oh, and did I forget to mention the gorgeous tapestry I bought the other day? It's just perfect.

It's probably a safe bet to assume that by that time, you would have decided whether you wanted to continue looking for interior design jobs or not.

If you want, you also have the option of attending an interior design college or taking some interior design courses to further your interior design knowledge. This is also a good way for you to test the water before you get in too deep. An added bonus with either of these options is that they can be accomplished with ease and shouldn't present you with any problems.

Taking any of these courses will only enhance your innate abilities and bring to the fore any talent you have in the field of interior designing. This in turn makes it easier for you to go in for more interior design jobs by giving you a boost in confidence and knowledge, so that you're more prepared to face whatever comes your way.

The most difficult part will be taking that all important first step of coming out your nice safe job to go out into the unknown world of bidding for interior design jobs. Black And White Ideas For Stylish Home Decor

January 18th, 2010

When people think about stylish home decor and making changes to their home, whether it be one or two rooms or the entire house, the first question that usually springs to mind is colour. Generally people choose colours they are fond of or those which correspond with pieces of their existing furniture. When searching for ideas for stylish home decor, one idea which is perhaps too often overlooked is decorating with the two basic colours (or shades, to be more accurate) " black and white.

Black and white, when used in decorating shows style and creates drama. Top interior designers say that every room in the house could benefit from using a touch of black. Black is a colour which anchors and grounds a room. Adding sophistication, black is definitely a colour that demands attention. Living room decorating ideas for a home using black can include accessories such as light fixtures, trim or furniture. Black serves to bring definition to the focal points in a room. Black is just one of the colours that stands out or makes a statement, but it is definitely one of the most outspoken!

Decorating with the shades of black and white in your living room decorating ideas, lends a clean, fresh, elegant environment. This combination can be used in any room in a home making it a sophisticated space. Black and white are frequently used in contemporary interior design and frequently used to accent other colours in the French Country style. It may be hard to conceptualize but there are many ideas for decorating a home using combinations of only these two basic colours.

The floor is a great area to start when considering stylish home decor. Black and white vinyl tiles laid alternately make a beautiful chessboard pattern and gives a clean and elegant appearance. Black marble used on the floor, accented by wide white skirting boards is another beautiful idea for decorating a home. Laying white ceramic tiles with a black border or simply painting the floor black or white and using stencils of the opposite colour for decoration, is also quite stunning. These are great ideas for decorating a home.

Can you imagine anything more perfect than white walls? Painting the walls white or even an off-white would make a perfect background for decorations such as paintings framed in black. What magnificent living room decorating ideas! Elegant black window surrounds or black shutters against a clean, crisp white wall would definitely create an aura of sophistication. Maybe a glass-topped table with a black iron trim and black chairs? These are great ideas for decorating a room using only black and white.

Just imagine a bedroom decorated using only black and white - that would be quite beautiful stylish home decor too. A black or white iron bed-stead with a striped black and white duvet or eiderdown on top. The pillow cases could be either all black or all white too and you could add throw cushions or / and a bolster in the other colour.

A chunky leather black or white armchair in the corner would definitely accent the room's stylish home decor. Then you could have the white walls with an elegant piece of artwork, framed in black hanging on it. That would surely add to the contemporary feel of your stylish home decor. Black furniture against the crisp white walls would look really neat and tidy and you could jazz up the room with accessories such as pewter or silver candlesticks, jugs or vases.

If you think the living room decorating ideas need a bit more colour to complete the effect, maybe a throw or a cushion in a bold colour like red or gold on the chair in the corner of the room would be enough to accent the room. There are many ways to decorate a room. However, discovering the one that suits you and those who live with you is very important. It's nice to do something extreme and off-the-wall but remember you must be able to live with it for quite sometime.
