Finding Affordable Camping Gear

June 24th, 2011

Camping is a very popular activity among the under Forties. People like to go hunting, fishing, hiking, walking or just camping with their friends, family or lover. The outdoors is attractive and can be romantic. Lots of people want to get a little closer to nature and the easiest way of doing this is sleeping under canvas, or nylon or something man-made like that. Another benefit for the young is that it is inexpensive.

However, it is not only inexpensive, it is healthy and educational. All children should go camping either with their parents or the scouts in order to learn something about nature before they get locked into a job to pay the mortgage and forget that there is life outside the city. You know, there are inner city children that do not know that milk comes from cows? How ludicrous is that?

So, if you are going to take an education in nature by the horns, you will have to have some camping equipment. Inexpensive though camping equipment is relative to the equipment required for other activities, most people still have to be a bit careful how much they spend.

If you fall into that bracket, then this article is for you. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, it is worth pointing out that if you have the money, you can do worse than simply going down to the local sports shop or camping shop and buying all your kit from them. Purchase everything you need in one go and ask for a discount. if anything ever goes wrong they will remember you as a big spender and fix it for you right away.

However, the remainder of have to be a bit more careful with the cheque book. If you know a bit concerning camping equipment from your parents or from the scouts and do not mind second-hand, then car boot sales and garage sales can be just the ticket.

Frequently people are selling things because their kids have left home and they are having a clear out or perhaps they have had more children and the pup tent is no longer any use to them.

I sold a lovely tent not so long ago for peanuts because I knew that I would never need it again. The beauty of these sales is that you can put the tent up or get the seller to put it up for a closer inspection. Look for rot, sniff for mildew, check the number of pegs and guide lines et cetera, but do not get carried away with perfection, you can buy extra pegs, lanyard and a mallet, but you do not want to have to sew up holes or replace zips or fly screen.

Classified ads are another good source of equipment, but pick the item up yourself so that you know where to take it back if you do not have the opportunity to inspect it properly before handing over the money.

EBay and Amazon are also pretty decent, but you have to do some research on the manufacturers' names and the standard retail prices otherwise you might end up purchasing a costly copy, a kiddies' toy tent or just junk.

One of my favourite shops to browse is the Army and Navy Surplus store. Try going into an A&N and coming out empty-handed. If the gear in there is decent enough for our troops to risk their lives with, it's decent enough for a week in the Poconos.

Hiking And Camping Is Undergoing A Revival

May 7th, 2011

Are you interested in getting closer to nature? Do you like walking and sleeping under the stars - or under canvas at least? If you do, then a walking or hiking and camping holiday may be just the thing for you. A hiking and camping holiday will get you out in the fresh air, permit you to observe nature first hand and cost you very little to boot. In short, hiking and camping are the ideal blend, if you are looking for a healthy, low-cost break outdoors.

Not only that but you can either go alone with a few good books, take a lover, take a friend or take the family with you. All in all, you have many options available to you if you want to trek off into the wild blue yonder on foot.

There are a couple of ways of approaching a vacation of this kind. You can either book into a hiking and camping site or you can literally only head off. If you have children with you then the camping ground is a necessity, but otherwise the decision is yours, although it has to be kept in mind, that camping off site is or can be illegal. Trespass is absolutely illegal as is causing a nuisance of yourself, putting wild animals under stress for no good reason, damaging trees or property and littering.

So, if you are new to hiking and camping, you will probably be better off going to a hiking and camping site or park. Do not be put off by this thought, some of them are truly immense. Check out the Poconos and other national parks for instance.

There is no doubt that price is a factor in the selection of a camping holiday for many young people, but it is rarely the sole reason why people like to get away and sleep under the stars. Getting back to nature and bird- and animal-watching are other everyday reasons.

If you fancy this sort of holiday, it is worth remembering that hiking and camping have become extremely popular pastimes of late. They always were well-liked, it is true, but they waned in the Eighties and Nineties, and are seeing a resurgence now. Therefore, do your homework, see where you would like to go, get some brochures or look on line and book up early. Yes, nowadays you have to book up early to get into the best hiking and camping sites again.

A final note of warning, if you decide to go off into the wilderness outside a camp site, let people know where you are. Take your mobile phone and a couple of fully-charged extra batteries and say when you are going to phone in that you are safe and make certain that you abide by it. It is very expensive if Air-Sea Rescue are called out on a wild goose chase.

Visit A Pheasant Farm & Indulge Yourself With A Hunt

July 12th, 2010

Pheasants can be found in numerous places around the world with many unique colors that will identify a species. These birds demand really good habitat for success. In some areas the bird thrives and others it won't. The wildcat is the most dangerous predator to the wild pheasant. It can jump off the terrain and take one right out the air at enormous speed and be consuming a snack in seconds. In spots that have raccoons and snakes, the eggs will be in peril also.

Every year there is more pheasant farms offering hunting to the general public. In addition to that, they provide a good habitat for pheasants to populate and grow. The farms will raise the young birds till they are big enough to release into the habitat, insuring a strong population for hunting.

Good hunting dogs are imperative to being successful on the hunting range. A good dog will not only find the bird, but also scare and retrieve it for you. It is a fairly wide consensus that Labrador retriever's make the best pheasant hunting dogs. They are very good at finding birds and retrieving the ones that are downed by birdshot. It's important to make sure your dog is in good shape before taking it out hunting for the first time. Your dog needs to build up to it because it will be chasing a lot of game and it can be a bad experience for a dog if it is not used to it.

During the hotter times of the year you will find a lot of pheasants congregating around water. They enjoy ponds, creeks, streams, faucets, irrigation areas as well as pumps. Just like fishing and other hunts you can expect great hunting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. The early morning hours seemed to be the best time of the day to take a lot of pheasant because they're just waking and not as alert to danger because they are out gathering food.

If you see birds moving around a lot, it is usually best to wait till they settle down to begin hunting. When you and your dog first arrive, there will be a lot more action on part of the pheasants to move and find shelter. Just hold still and wait for things to calm down. It is important that you have tracking skills and have scouted the area prior to going hunting. On a pheasant farm you don't have to worry about finding birds as they are often releases just hours prior to your hunt.

Background On The Pheasant

July 1st, 2010

Many hunters like to get out on a Saturday afternoon in search for wild pheasant. Phasianus Colchicus is the scientific name of the common pheasant. Many hunters call it simply pheasant or English pheasant.

Living in wooded locations, pheasants will eat larvae millipedes, snails, earthworms, grasshoppers, and spiders. All these soft animals and insects make for a delicious treat for these exquisite birds. They like to also feed on a variety of grains and berries. At night, these gorgeous fowl will roost up in the trees and at daybreak they will peck the ground for some tasty treats.

Partridge, quail, or ruffed grouse may also be referred to as pheasants by some. In the U. S., the ring-necked pheasant were introduced in the 1800's. The male, known as the cock, has brilliant brown plumage with a green, purple marking with a white ring around the neck. The female, also known as the hen, has a duller brown plumage. The male and female pheasant has two things in common, they both have short rounded wings and very strong and stout beaks with a yellowish appearance. The male can have a tail over 20 inches long and it often has long sharp spurs that often protects it from other wild animals.

Pheasant populations are sensitive to land development as well as clear cutting and environmental pollution. For the sake of the future of pheasant's in the United States, there are more and more pheasant farms being started to help boost the local bird populations. Pheasant farms guarantee a better solution for the pheasants to survive and flourish so that future generations can enjoy the bounty of the land.

The Great Plains has a huge population of pheasants that live in the open grass prairies and around the old farm houses. The birds absolutely love to peck around on the grasses for grains and insects in the fields and roost around old homeplaces and farming implements. The United Kingdom has a lot more pheasants than we do here in the United States. In the United States, it is estimated that there are about 10 million pheasants while in the UK there are approximately 35 million.

Males do a strutting movement in the spring of the year to entice a female into courting. Strutting is when a cock puffs his feathers and his head will become bright red and engorged. Males will fight each other to the end for breeding rights with the females.

Male birds are polyamorous because they will mate with more than one female throughout their lifetime. It is common to find more than one female following the male at any one time. The females nest on the ground and will have about 10 eggs per nest. The incubations period last between 23-26 days between April to June.

Global Warming Quicker Than Forecast

October 4th, 2009

An increasingly large amount of scientific research, published since the IPCC 4th Assessment Report was released in 2007, shows that climate change is occurring right now, and that it is much faster than predicted only two years ago.

The evidence for this statement is from many areas. Some of the areas showing change are shown below.

-Many physical systems, in widespread sites, are already showing evidence of global warming. Examples include the timing of plant flowering, animal breeding, and lake thawing.

-Increased ocean surface temperatures in Pacific & Atlantic hurricane-formation zones which will lead to stronger cyclones are definitely related to human-induced warming.

-Acidification of the world's oceans is happening quickly, because of CO2 in massive amounts being dissolved in salty water. This is going to have major changes on marine environments and as a result food supplies for many areas.

-Expected sea-level elevation over the next few decades will be greater than that predicted in 2007. It will probably increase a metre or more, according to recently published research.

-The increased melting of the Greenland ice sheet which began in the summer of 2004 has been definitely related to global warming.

-The West Antarctic Ice Shelf has undergone rapid melting over the last 10 years and has suffered 10 major ice shelf collapses over that time.

-Arctic sea-ice is melting much faster than previously estimated, and it is almost certain that the Arctic will be ice-free in summer before 2080.

-Permafrost in the Arctic Circle is thawing much quicker than recently thought, and is releasing larger amounts of greenhouse gases than predicted.

The climate change that we are now witnessing is expected to continue for millennia, even after all anthropogenic carbon dioxide production stops. This is because of the major lags present in the climate system, and the slow removal of CO2 from the atmosphere.
