When Fear Is A Part Of Life At School

April 30th, 2011

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some kids hate every minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Often it is the clever children who are bullied for being swots and teachers' pets. They are safe and sound in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can be nightmares.

However, it is not only bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other reasons for fear in school as well. Occasionally, children think that a certain teacher does not like them and sometimes children are just frightened of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are frightened of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you ask yourself how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can become greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the children are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most insidious kind of fear in school comes from teachers who are scared of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their students. The regime of fear is exacerbated by over-sized classes. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of only so many pupils - as we all can in normal discourse. Therefore, if the class is too large, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this occurs, education suffers for the sake of keeping order.

For all of these reasons and more, many parents are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to educate their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to teach their children in a more conventional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can buy to give them a course of action on what to teach. There is also a lot of help available on the Internet. The problem facing any parents who wish to educate their own children is providing a rounded education.

People have a natural tendency to specialize in one subject or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools supply numerous teachers, so that every one can teach his or her favourite subject. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is difficult to teach maths if you have no talent for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the considerable decision to withdraw your children from school and educate them themselves

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on numerous subjects but is currently involved with Fear At School and Home Schooling. If you would like to read more, please go over to our web site entitled Home Schooling.

Music Lessons Are Great For Kids

April 29th, 2011

All parents enjoy it when their kids learn and grow in a variety of areas. They wish for their child to stay on track and have many more opportunities than they had when they were little. Learning music is important for all children. Music education has been shown to improve kids' performance in academic studies and other areas of their lives. This is true whether they become skilled at a particular instrument or if they just learn the basics, such as reading and making music. It helps them learn discipline and develop an appreciation for all arts. When parents are considering music lessons for children, they commonly ask what age is appropriate to begin these lessons.

The truth is that there is no one time that is right for every child. Most schools will offer some type of music class beginning at fourth or fifth grade, and this is a great way to get initial exposure. When they're ready, though, it's very beneficial if you can get them into private music lessons. But just when is the right time?

Start by evaluating how well you child is doing in school and finding out what their interest level in music is. If they are excelling at school, constantly learning, and incredibly interested in music or instruments, the time may be now. Starting it when they are enthusiastic and genuinely interested is much better than waiting until they are teenagers who are apt to balk and think it childish.

Communicating with your child is important too. To be successful, your child must take music lessons are seriously as they take their schoolwork. You need to let them know that upfront. Hiring a private music tutor is by no means inexpensive, and let them know that often. Discipline and motivation are essential to successful education in music or anything else. They must be ready and willing to study and practice consistently.

If you think this is the time for your son or daughter to start music lessons, it's time to think about which instrument they should study. If they have solid understanding of music theory and can read music well after their classes at school, they should be able to play any instrument they wish. Often a child will express a strong interest in a particular instrument, which will help with the motivation. If she's willing to consider more options, many experts recommend studying piano for at least a year before moving on to another instrument. This will give them a good groundwork to build off of.

When they do start, they will need constant support, and prodding encouragement. Help them practice consistently by setting up a schedule and an environment much like you do for homework. Helping them know that you are interested will keep them motivated and inspired to work harder and do more. Stay involved and talk to their teacher about how you can help. Like anything else worth learning, music takes a lot of time and effort.

As time goes by, you will need to stay observant of your child and how they are doing. If it turns out to be a huge struggle and something that they just do not enjoy at all, you may want to let them take up something else after a year or so.

The other possibility is that they absolutely love music and want to continue on. Either way, practice will sometimes be boring and they won't want to do it. Support and praise from you will help them get a lot of benefit out of music lessons regardless of how far they choose to take it.

You can find music classes in San Diego or anywhere. music summer camps Orange County can be found at this online directory.

Vitamin And Nutrient Supplements

April 22nd, 2011

We all know that we have to get all the vitamins that our body has to have in order to function correctly, although most of us do not know exactly what they are. We also know that it is better to acquire these vitamins and nutrients from our food rather than from tablets or supplements. Unfortunately, this is not always possible, so sometimes we have to resort to supplements.

Some people resort to supplements because the food that contains the vitamins that they are lacking is difficult to come by, a problem to cook or is too costly. This is why the provision of vitamins, nutrients and supplements is such big business, being worth billions of dollars every year.

Supplements come in three different types: liquid, tablets and capsules containing liquid or solids. Naturally, it is best to make sure that the supplement dissolves in your system before it passes through you, which is why the liquid kind is considered the best type.

However, some individuals do not like the taste of the liquid, which is where capsules containing liquid come in. They also happen to be the most expensive type.

Some people have a problem swallowing tablets and tablets are the kind that sometimes do not entirely dissolve. Before you buy your supplements there are a couple of things to check.

The first is to find out what the 'recommended daily amount' (RDA) of every vitamin and mineral is in your country. I say 'in your country' because not every country recommends the same amounts.

Then check the country of origin of the supplements. There are some countries I would not have confidence in, but that is your choice. It is worth being aware of though. It is pointless taking a higher dose than the RDA unless your doctor tells you to.

It is also not really worth taking a great deal less unless you are truly just supplementing the vitamins in your regular food intake.

While you have worked out your requirements you could go down to your local health food store to find the names and prices of manufacturers that can fulfill your needs.

Then go back home and check Amazon and eBay for prices of the same items. Shopping for supplements in this way can save you more than 50% on High Street shop prices.

If you are having difficulty working out which vitamins you should be taking ask your GP as your age, sex, degree of fitness and health can all have an effect on your requirements. One thing you must never do though is attempt to replace food with supplements.

You need both or rather you should take your vitamins in your food if at all possible. Vitamin supplements are only that - supplements to food, not replacements for it. Some minerals such as essential fatty acids like Omega 3 do not have an RDA in each country, so you should take private advice on these essential fatty acids especially DHA and EPA long chain essential fatty acids from fish oil.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of topics, and is now concerned with omega 6 and omega 3. If you want to know more, please visit our site at Omega 6 9

How To Organize Your Coat Closet Or Cloakroom

April 21st, 2011

Most people have some type of arrangement near the main entrance to their house, mostly the front door, for storing residents' and visitors' coats. Some houses have a simple row of hooks in the hall, whereas others have a dedicated coat closet or cloakroom.

Furthermore, most of these spaces are fairly chaotic with coats heaped over other coats which are heaped on top of other coats that no-one has worn for years.

You ought to apply the same rules to organizing this area, let's call it a cloakroom for easy reference, as you do to your bedroom closets or wardrobes. The trick is that everything should have a place and everything must be in that place, which means that you and all the family or all the household have to be aware of the rules.

It simply does not make for a tidy cloakroom if some folk stick to the rules while others do what they please. Let's take an average family or household of four as another norm. Four people like this will own a coat or two each, a jacket, perhaps an umbrella and several pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers maybe.

You could install a shoe rack so that each person can store, say, three pairs of shoes each in the cloakroom. If your shoe rack has four levels then three pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers each. Everything else has to be kept either in the bedroom or the garage. Some footwear is seasonal, so this ought not be too much of a difficulty.

Likewise with coats and jackets. You could have a row of coat hooks around the walls of the cloakroom and allocate every member of the household a certain number of hooks. (Look out for the cloakroom hooks that have a top and bottom hook - two for the space of one).

Again, all non-seasonal coats to be stored in the bedroom. One more tip here, remember to assign a row of pegs for visitors. Perhaps one of the small walls of a small cloakroom could be set apart for guests.

An ideal cloakroom would have a shoe rack at the floor level or a bit higher, then a row of double coat pegs and then a shelf running around it. This shelf is important. People used to wear hats a great deal more than they do now, but some people still wear gloves, scarves and shawls that they would rather not hang on a peg and others like to ride a motorbike.

Never worry, you will always find something to put on a shelf in a cloakroom even if it is merely a tin of air freshener to spray around before friends arrive.

One more thing that is frequently stored in cloakrooms that you should reserve space for is the vacuum cleaner. It is convenient to have a vacuum cleaner in the hall to pick up the bits of mud and garbage that inevitably get carried or blown into the hall, but you will always have space for one in a well-organized cloakroom

Online Dangers To Child Safety

April 19th, 2011

What is there to say about the world children live in these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is dropping its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our kids.

What makes it even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to prevent our kids from visiting websites of an adult nature. These days children are knowledgeable about technology and often more so than their parents. How can we keep our children safe from online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while still fighting the corruption that goes on in the world?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can protect our kids by monitoring their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will write only of the Internet providers I know about, since not all programs are the same. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will have to go to 'Safety' on the toolbar and click on 'Parental Controls'.

Once you arrive there, you will see a list of usernames available. Search for your child's username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on 'Edit Web Control' and then click 'Kids Only', and close. Now your child is protected against dangerous sites.

Chat rooms can be serious threats to children, since anyone can go into these rooms, and often predators frequent these areas, so as to entice children into a web of danger. In the AOL browser, click 'Safety' and then click 'Parental Controls'.

In the same way, click on the 'Edit IM Controls', 'Edit E-mail Controls', and 'Edit Chat Control' and complete the same steps as you did to instigate the 'Parental Controls'.

It is wise to install passwords. Having passwords will offer additional protection to your child. However, do not give your child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might also reset the controls.

It is also a good idea to activate your 'Popup Controllers' too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into 'AOL Safety' at the toolbar to start these popup controls.

If you use Internet Explorer; open a page. Click on 'Tools' at the top menu, then click 'Popup Blocker' and then click 'Popup Blocker Settings'. Read the details carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is the norm and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium, you could find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have met sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Further studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The studies say that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that around 74% of the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the sites did not issue adult content warnings. Another 11% of the sites did not have sexually explicit content warnings, and 25% mousetrapped the visitors, by not allowing them to leave the sites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. Protect your child now!

Classic Presents For Teens

April 17th, 2011

Buying presents for teenagers can become very difficult, particularly if you do not know teenagers very well. The problem with teenagers is that some are more grown up than others and if you do not know the individual very well, you do not know whether to tend towards the adult or the child. However, you can always purchase a 'little bit older' knowing that if you have not judged the mental age accurately, then they will mentally grow into the present.

There are a couple of classic gifts that teenagers feel are not too young for them, presents that make them feel grown up. These gifts are not in any particular order.

A watch is always helpful - a small dainty watch for a girl and a big chunky thing for a boy. It does not matter whether it is wind-up, automatic or battery and it does not have to be one of the very expensive names, but it is better if it is pretty famous like a Seiko.

A chain, necklace or bracelet of precious metal will be appreciated by any teen, but particularly by girls. Nine carat gold or silver is not that expensive, but it will hold its value. A St Christopher can be a decent present for someone who is religious or not.

Teenagers like clothing and shoes, but it is best to bear the clothing on the casual side. Like trainers instead of shoes or a T-shirt rather than a shirt with a collar, a hoodie rather than a jacket. A leather belt is also worth considering.

Sunglasses are mostly appreciated, but it is vital to get the style right. Ask the parents of the teenager which designer label the teenager prefers.

Music is a classic present for a teenager, but there is such a choice of media to play it on nowadays. Perhaps a present voucher from a big high street record shop that also has an on line presence is best. That way, they can either purchase a CD or download the music from the Net onto their MP3 player.

An atmospheric lamp can be a good present if the teenager spends a great deal of time in his or her room. Lava lamps and optic fibre lamps are just the ticket.

Something for the computer. Most teens have a computer, so you could buy a web cam, a wireless mouse or a wireless keyboard. Or a new computer game. If the teen has a laptop, they might appreciate a new laptop case or carrying bag. Laptops do come with a carrying bag, but they take quite a bashing and soon become frayed and scruffy.

A decent quality pen. Not many teenagers use fountain pens these days, but they are still a good present. It might encourage the teen to tidy up his or her handwriting otherwise a famous-name biro, but it is really not the same as a classic fountain pen and a bottle of ink. You could add a blotter to this little package as well as no-one seems to have one any more.

Buying Baby Bedding At A Discount

November 12th, 2010

Having a baby, as every parent knows, is a costly business. Especially if it is your first and you have to purchase everything new. However, numerous parents find that it is not the obvious items like nappies, bottles, rompers, pram, cot and clothing, which push the costs up, although they are not cheap either, but that it is the less obvious necessities that surprise them.

Items such as bedding. Baby bedding has to be correct. That means that the baby bedding has to be the right size for the cot. If it is too big, it will rumple up and there is a risk that the baby will sleep against restricting it's breathing and if it is too small, the baby can slip into the gap with the same effect. You also do not want piles of bedding on the baby either, so it is best to get good quality blankets manufactured from wool. Discount baby bedding can therefore save you a lot of money.

The difficulty is though that although you would like to purchase baby bedding at a discount, you do not want to buy poor quality baby bedding. It is often better to get one decent quality but expensive item than several poor quality cheap ones. For instance, one good quality woollen blanket will do the job of three thin cotton blankets.

Occasionally, you may find that a theme can be a cheap way of acquiring baby bedding at a discount. For example, if you buy the sheets, the blanket and the pillow cases in one package it might be cheaper than buying all the objects individually.

The Net is the easiest place to find discount baby bedding. There is no particular season which is best for searching for discount baby bedding, but right after Christmas is as good as any. Christmas and the New Year is when a great deal of merchants would like to sell off the stock that they had over-bought for sale prior to Christmas. They also require to make room for new styles that come out in the Spring.

Merchants tend to over-charge for baby items because they know that parents have to have the items and will not want to appear to be scrimping on their baby. One way around this is to make your own baby bedding. If you make your own baby bedding, you can make it to the exact size that you need to fit your baby's cot and push-chair.

There are two ways of going about this. You could either cut down one of your torn full size sheets and blankets or you could buy new specially for the purpose. If you buy new, work out first what size blankets and sheets you will require in order to get the most for your cot and push chair. For example, from a queen-bed size blanket, you may get two for the cot and one for the push-chair with some left over, but for a few dollars more, you may get an extra set of each from king-size bedding.

All you have to do is cut them to size and add piping, frills or some other edging material and you have ideal, made-to-measure, totally unique baby bedding at a discount.

Some Ideas About Memory Foam Products

November 7th, 2010

Have you been considering getting a memory foam mattress or a memory foam topper or pad? You probably have seen hundreds of compelling adverts this year about memory foam products.

The fact of the matter is that memory foam is a first rate product that has been about for forty years and the simple reason why you have the chance to purchase some now, is because the price has fallen greatly over the last two or three years.

Forty years ago there was only one firm producing this revolutionary new foam which was a spin-off of the NASA space programme and production costs were horrendous, but these days production costs have fallen and many more businesses produce memory foam and the competition has lowered the price too.

Memory foam has always been a godsend to sufferers of bad backs, arthritis, allergies and sensitive skin, because as it wraps itself around your body it increases the surface area by which your body is supported and increased surface area means less pressure.

The cell structure of memory foam permits you to adjust its temperature very easily because it sucks in the surrounding air. In regular foam, the bubbles are completely sealed so your body heats up the air trapped within and it stays hot because it can not escape.

However, the bubbles of air in memory foam are not completely sealed, so as you move about, air is passed from one bubble to another. This means that some air is squeezed outside the mattress and more air is sucked in. Therefore, you can regulate the temperature of the mattress by regulating the temperature of the air in the room.

The first maker of memory foam mattresses thirty years ago was Tempurpedic and they are still often perceived as the brand leaders because they have the most experience making mattresses from memory foam, but they are also the most costly.

Other manufacturers are Sealy, which is no new-comer to the world of mattresses, being the largest manufacturer of mattresses in the world. Serta is also in there.

There are two fundamental kinds of memory foam: high density and low density and both of them have different characteristics. High density reacts more to weight and low density reacts more to heat, so if you go shopping for a memory foam mattress, you will have to understand what these terms mean. Some manufacturers have put layers of either type in order to endeavor to gain advantage from every feature.

There is no question that memory foam mattresses have come down in cost a great deal recently and they will probably continue to fall in cost, but if you want to dip your toe in to find out more, you could get a decent memory foam topper or pad to put on top of your existing mattress. That option costs less than a hundred dollars. Look on eBay or Amazon.

Only one last article of advice on this wonderful new foam, if you decide to get a memory foam topper instead of a memory foam mattress, do not buy anything that is less than two or three inches in thickness..

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a number of subjects, but is now concerned with the pillow top mattress pads. If you would like to know more, please visit our website at Egg Crate Mattress Pad For Sale.

Learning History At Home Schooling

October 2nd, 2010

Do you think that passing time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For some people, that is probably true. For example, an exam is due and the students are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will definitely forget 90% of those dates and names. That's what the majority of students do every time they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which concentrates more on the history of the world, will probably interest you more.

Simple memorization is not enough to know the importance of famous people and important events. Through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way - your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the current situation of the world today.

If you think that home schooling is the most effective option for your child's learning, you should also be prepared to take on some responsibilities. Since there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to supervise your child's educational progress yourself.

Let's just suppose that your child is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you can start by simply putting a map on the wall of your child's bedroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team's activities and schedules. Then, you could return to history lessons by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child follows. Apart from that, you could also study the history of that particular sport and discover where it started, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.

For instance, if your child likes baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of steroids and other favourite hobbies during that period in time. But remember that you can apply this method to any interest such as dancing, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current affairs or read interesting historical documents and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use while home schooling, like TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is best when it is done in an interesting way.

These methods are recommended for when the child is still young, but once your child is older, you must choose an appropriate home schooling program that is suitable to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search online for these different programs. A good thing about these programs is that you can tailor them to fit the needs of your child. However, you must ensure that all the lessons are followed by your child.

Once you and your child have decided to go for home schooling, you must be prepared for some changes to take place in your life. The learning environment will now be your home not a school and through the various resources that you can use including the computer and Internet.

Protecting Children With Mental Health Problems

July 31st, 2010

Who are the predators? Predators are Cyber Stalkers, serial killers/rapists, rapists, paedophiles, women beaters, child abusers, thieves et cetera. Predators very often have mental disorders that keep them from behaving properly in normal society. Children with mental illnesses are often the prey of these predators, and sometimes children with mental disorders are the predators themselves. In fact, the distributor of one of the most serious viruses online came from an eighteen-year old English boy.

Dangers mental illnesses: Not everyone with a mental illness is a danger to society. In general, predators with mental illnesses are plagued with sociopathic, psychopathic and anti-social disorders, oppositional defiance, conduct control disorders, schizophrenia, borderline personality disorders (BPD), and psychosis. While there are a few other mental illnesses that present a threat to our society, this is a list of the most common potential dangers that wait on the streets and on the Internet.

How to save a child with mental disorders from dangers : Never treat your child as if he/she has a mental illness. Treat your child as special, yet avoid treating the child as if he/she is mentally ill, because a lot of mentally ill patients are extremely intelligent. Teach your child the same rules that other children have to live by and stick to the rules. Do not leave room for movement when danger is present. Teach your child respect by showing respect yourself.

Children with dangerous mental disorders will often want to watch pornography, violent images, content, and so forth. This makes it harder as a parent to protect your child. However, it is important that you enforce the laws. Never put yourself in danger while enforcing these laws, since some children with dangerous problems may cause you harm.

If the child refuses to listen to you, bring the police in and make sure that they do their job to help you enforce the rules. You may pay court fees and go through headaches, but I promise you it will benefit you in the end. As a mother raising two boys with dangerous mental diseases, I can tell you it isn't simple, but it can be done.

Children with mental disorders often have brilliant minds that can often get round any parental controls and will do so without you even knowing. Take extra time than normal to monitor your child's activity online. Teach your child that giving out personal details is dangerous and encourage them to request your permission when thinking about giving name, phone number or other information online.

Leave room for your child to take some responsibility and always encourage your child to participate in family discussions that involve them. Encourage the child to protect their safety by encouraging them to report any wrong committed against them.

One of the hardest things you'll ever have to do while raising a child with mental health problems is teaching him/her to stay away from violent images and pornography. It is next to impossible to keep them clear of this trash. Still, it can be done if you set a good example for the child to follow.

It is important that you keep talking and listening to your child. Allow your child to express concerns, opinions, ideals, theories and so forth without demeaning the child. You will be amazed at the wisdom children with certain mental disorders have, if you will only listen to them.

The best advice I can offer you for dealing with children with major mental illnesses, such as psychopathy, is to seek help and stand firm. For additional child safety advice for children with mental disorders ask advice from a qualified professional.

Note: Children learn what they see and hear.
