Ancient Astronauts and Contemporary Skepticism

July 9th, 2011

Over the course of the past year, I closely assisted a colleague in writing a series of ten articles covering diverse aspects of my ancient astronaut theory. All ten of those articles circulated widely around the globe and view counters on many sites indicated plentiful readership, but feedback to me, or to her, from anywhere, was non-existent. There was neither criticism nor acclaim from anyone. Just silence. I was starting to think that perhaps no one in world wants to take ancient astronauts seriously.

In an attempt to make some progress, I decided to pay sixty dollars for a review of my ancient astronaut website. Of course, this was to be a review by skeptics; a review by New Age believers would be worthless. Their blog's description was "critical reviews of paranormal claims on the Internet." The intermediary granted them five days to perform their review but that has long since come and gone, and not a word from them. My website presents a vast amount of evidence and, in truth, I could not expect anyone to produce a good critical review in just five days. No one, including myself, would want to see quickly prepared and frivolous arguments, else I would make them look ridiculous in my counter arguments. Moreover, some of my evidence comes from Spanish-language sources and, to start, they would need time to verify that none of it is a hoax. They are welcome to all the time they need.

What to expect from this blog is uncertain. There are skeptics who are as narrow-minded in their thinking as their New Age counterparts, and then again, there are skeptics, like me, who objectively evaluate the evidence to arrive at the truth. Was there a real ancient astronaut? To help the skeptics answer that question, I will give them some ideas on how to refute my theories. Here, solely for space considerations, I will concentrate on the archaeological evidence, leaving aside ideas on how to refute the cryptology and theology evidence for another day.

My website reproduces engravings from the Tiwanaku civilization in Bolivia. One of those engravings depicts the alleged ancient astronaut as an aquatic with a three-pronged tail, with each of the three prongs ending in a pod. How do the skeptics refute that? Easy. They simply need to demonstrate that the shape of those pods resembles some form of animal or plant life to be found in that region. In other words, they need to find a terrestrial source for those engravings, otherwise my extraterrestrial arguments remain unharmed.

The timing of the Tiwanaku sky-god drawings coincides with the timing of the Nazca Lines in Peru, so the ancient astronaut of both places has to be one and the same. For Nazca, the skeptics will find many ready-made arguments, but I consider all of them weak. The mentality of the people of Nazca cannot be assumed to be unique in human history. It has to be demonstrated that people elsewhere also believed that the sun, moon, or sky-spirits had physical eyes that could observe ground drawings. Alternatively, it has to be demonstrated that the people of Nazca worshipped birds, believing them to have cognitive intelligence.

The recorded engravings on the cosmological Sun Disk, alleged alien artifact, may prove to be the biggest challenge for the skeptics. How are we to believe that the Andeans of the early sixteenth century a) knew that the Earth was round, b) knew that it was possible to orbit the Earth, c) knew that sunlight striking the moon could reflect back to strike a spaceship, d) knew that the dark clouds along the Milky Way contained stars within, and e) knew that water formed the basis of plant and animal evolution? Here the skeptics would need to find parallels in the history of western civilization. I look forward to their response.

Learning Speed Reading

July 6th, 2011

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can tell who the broad-spectrum readers are. Wide readers often think and speak well. They win the admiration, respect, and good opinion of others. After all, reading expands the mind. In fact, many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures of mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale of television.

Reading is primarily a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the detective thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas introduced by the author in that self-help book you are studying.

Reading effectively helps you to develop an extensive range of vocabulary by reading different kinds of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.

The act of reading makes you more aware and more curious about new words. Some readers even like to employ 'the dictionary habit', which means that whenever they find a new word, they attempt to work out what it means from the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to a dictionary.

Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to different subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too - a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you have to make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.

Now let me introduce you to the idea of speed reading. All of the above applies three, four, eight, nine, even ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Imagine that ... being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or college ...

Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember that practice makes perfect. 2) Learn the habit of reading the main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate - the principal ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try to read faster. Give yourself a time limit for the specific article that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You have so much to gain by discovering the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right this minute.

Are you interested in speed reading for yourself or a loved one? If so, please pop along to our website focusing on Speed Reading.

Why Must We Have To Choose Between Children And School Bus Drivers

May 25th, 2011

Bus drivers would have to give up their personal privacy in order to guarantee protection of their passengers. They must disclose psychological and physical health problems to their employer. In addition, they also have to consent to random drug testing and list the drugs they are on. These were the recommendations written by Judge Bruce Fraser in the fatal accident inquiry report on the fatality of a small child in 2007.

The nine-year-old girl was killed in a school bus crash on October 18, 2007. The school bus driven by Louise Rogers swerved into a parked gravel truck then slammed into a power pole. This incident killed the girl and seriously injured 3 other children including her sister. All four are studying at Mountain View Academy but shared a bus with Third Academy at the time.

There was no suggestion that Ms. Rogers did it on purpose, as Judge Fraser wrote in his report. Authorities found no rationale why the bus driver drifted onto the shoulder where the truck was broken down. Investigations revealed that the driver had recently been hospitalized for mental health problems. She was taking sleeping pills and antidepressants. Tests revealed that the level of these drugs were low in her system.

The design of the school bus concerned might have also aggravated the accident. Judge Fraser wrote that the bus was designed so that the passenger section extends beyond the cab or engine section. This adds to the danger of the passengers since their bodies are exposed outside the engine of the vehicle, consequently increasing the danger. This is a design error that is often found in smaller buses which has to be given consideration.

The suggestions presented by the judge received constructive responses. Aside from those that were formerly described, he added one more recommendation. Bus drivers who went on leave due to psychological or physical problems must be required to present a report. This has to be issued by a health professional, stating therein whether the person is in shape to resume work.

Moreover, bus drivers should be banned from using hand-held devices such as phones and musical devices while on duty, especially while driving. According to sources, there is a draft of a new legislation prohibiting all hand-held devices behind the wheel.

The lesson from this unpleasant incident tells that all schools should set stricter standards in the hiring of school bus drivers. There should be a process in place to evaluate the mental health of would-be drivers. It is exceptionally vital to determine whether these issues will influence their driving. A little less of privacy for bus drivers would ensure the security of children under their charge while on the bus.

We strive to shield our kids. We let them out of our sight at school. But we must not let them out of our sight online. Keep them secure by installing an Anonymous Proxy to hide where they live.

Ways Of Fundraising For Schools

May 13th, 2011

Many schools have to take part in fund raising because of a deficit in government funding. This shortage of sufficient government funding will only get worse given the cutbacks that the governments of the world have seen fit to enforce in order to help resolve the financial crisis caused by the failure of so many financial institutions.

It is commonly known as the banking crisis and it is being used as an excuse for cutting the funding of government departments like schooling and health care. You will become able to judge how hard your local schools have been hit by the amount of school fund raising in your region.

A conventional way of school fund raising is the selling of items from a catalogue from door to door. Typically, school children are given the catalogues to take home and to take around their neighbours. Those who sell the most often win prizes.

The season of school fund raising usually begins when the kids go back to school in the autumn after the summer break. If the schools in your area have been badly hit by the cutbacks, you might have dozens of kids knocking on your door trying to sell you over-priced knick-knacks.

However, some schools strive to be more creative in their fund raising, because fewer and fewer people are prepared to pay way over the top for spare plugs, wrapping paper and scissors.

Some of these innovative ideas include selling sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, barbecued chicken and cookie dough. Other ways are to hold a bring and buy sale or a fayre with sideshows, stalls, bingo and a bouncy house. Raffles are also popular methods of raising money for schools as long as the prizes are worth winning.

Although school fund raising is a nuisance for parents, it is a necessary evil, if the school is to meet its responsibility to provide children with a decent education. One good method of increasing money is to publish a monthly school magazine. Kids and teachers can write pieces and stories for the magazine and a board of students and teachers can edit and compile it.

It is a decent idea if the head teacher gives a report in each issue. Local businesses can be approached to buy marketing space and the magazine can be sold for a small amount. This will provide a regular and fairly stable monthly income and every parent will want one as will other individuals who live in the environs of the school.

The difficulty of underfunding is a big one and it will not be going away any time soon, however, families are suffering from the financial squeeze as well so schools ought to change their focus while attempting to raise money. Parents definitely do not like to feel obliged to purchase over-priced rubbish because it is children who are flogging it - it is a form of moral blackmail.

The best way to raise money for schools is to provide value for money. So, if you have to organize school fund raising, give out catalogues by all means, but make them decent ones or make your own in conjunction with a large, local department store; put on a Christmas pantomime, nativity play or/and carol service; in the warmer months organize public events like bazaars, fayres and bring and buy sales and publish a monthly school magazine all the way through the year.

When Fear Is A Part Of Life At School

April 30th, 2011

Do you have happy memories of your school years? Do you have happy memories of teachers and school friends? If you do then you were lucky, because some kids hate every minute of being in school and not because they are no good at it either. Often it is the clever children who are bullied for being swots and teachers' pets. They are safe and sound in the class, but the travelling to and from school and the school breaks can be nightmares.

However, it is not only bullying from other children that causes fear in school children. There are other reasons for fear in school as well. Occasionally, children think that a certain teacher does not like them and sometimes children are just frightened of failing or doing badly. Occasionally teachers are frightened of doing badly as well. It can all lead to an atmosphere of fear at school. It makes you ask yourself how anyone could have enjoyed their school days, does it not?

This atmosphere of fear can become greater in state schools because the teachers are subject to success charts and the children are more open to bullying. Furthermore, all of the school shootings in the world have taken place in state run schools.

However, the most insidious kind of fear in school comes from teachers who are scared of missing the targets set by the state, because that will cost them their jobs. This fear is passed on to their students. The regime of fear is exacerbated by over-sized classes. Why?

Because teachers can hold the attention of only so many pupils - as we all can in normal discourse. Therefore, if the class is too large, the teacher will have to switch roles from being a teacher to a controller. When this occurs, education suffers for the sake of keeping order.

For all of these reasons and more, many parents are turning to home schooling. Some of the reasons why parents are deciding to educate their children themselves are: distrust of the state education system; fear of bullying or worse of their children; a desire to teach their children in a more conventional or religious manner.

There are education packages that parent-teachers can buy to give them a course of action on what to teach. There is also a lot of help available on the Internet. The problem facing any parents who wish to educate their own children is providing a rounded education.

People have a natural tendency to specialize in one subject or group of topics like, say, astronomy or the sciences, which is why schools supply numerous teachers, so that every one can teach his or her favourite subject. However, if you are the only teacher you will have to teach all the subjects yourself.

This is why it is best to have a course or set of guidelines to follow. It is difficult to teach maths if you have no talent for it, so look at your strengths but also your weaknesses before you take the considerable decision to withdraw your children from school and educate them themselves

Owen Jones, the author of this piece writes on numerous subjects but is currently involved with Fear At School and Home Schooling. If you would like to read more, please go over to our web site entitled Home Schooling.

Online Dangers To Child Safety

April 19th, 2011

What is there to say about the world children live in these days? Sexed-up television, pornographic Internet sites and videos and violent board games. A world that is dropping its standards, values, and morals each day, surrounds our kids.

What makes it even worse is that we cannot use Parental Controls any more to prevent our kids from visiting websites of an adult nature. These days children are knowledgeable about technology and often more so than their parents. How can we keep our children safe from online dangers? How can we as parents provide safety for our children, while still fighting the corruption that goes on in the world?

Parental Controls are available on most types of Internet software, yet today, children are skilled at by-passing these Parental Controls. So, what can we do? We can protect our kids by monitoring their activities on the Internet closely.

How to use parental controls: It depends on which Internet provider you use, however, I will write only of the Internet providers I know about, since not all programs are the same. To use AOL Parental Controls, you will have to go to 'Safety' on the toolbar and click on 'Parental Controls'.

Once you arrive there, you will see a list of usernames available. Search for your child's username and click on the username. You will see a popup window appear. Click on 'Edit Web Control' and then click 'Kids Only', and close. Now your child is protected against dangerous sites.

Chat rooms can be serious threats to children, since anyone can go into these rooms, and often predators frequent these areas, so as to entice children into a web of danger. In the AOL browser, click 'Safety' and then click 'Parental Controls'.

In the same way, click on the 'Edit IM Controls', 'Edit E-mail Controls', and 'Edit Chat Control' and complete the same steps as you did to instigate the 'Parental Controls'.

It is wise to install passwords. Having passwords will offer additional protection to your child. However, do not give your child the passwords, because this will give the child control over the Internet connection, and the child might also reset the controls.

It is also a good idea to activate your 'Popup Controllers' too, since if you do not turn on the controls, pop ups could carry something that will corrupt your system or popup adult content, which your child will see if online. You can go into 'AOL Safety' at the toolbar to start these popup controls.

If you use Internet Explorer; open a page. Click on 'Tools' at the top menu, then click 'Popup Blocker' and then click 'Popup Blocker Settings'. Read the details carefully and set the program at medium. Medium is the norm and will block most pop ups. If you put the settings higher than medium, you could find it difficult to open websites for browsing.

Some of the dangers posed to children online include: Internet Porn; Child Porn; Child Sexual Abuse; Mobile Porn; and more. As you can see, your child is at serious risk, and if you want to master safety, you have to monitor, and take the steps to safeguard your child against online dangers.

According to recent studies, students have met sexual malpractices through webcams, instant messengers, and mobile phones. Further studies show that pornographic websites are making more profit than each of CBS, ABC, and NBC television channels each year. The studies say that the largest group that views porn sites are children. These children are between the ages of twelve and seventeen.

The statistics showed that around 74% of the porn sites had unmonitored banners, while another 66% of the sites did not issue adult content warnings. Another 11% of the sites did not have sexually explicit content warnings, and 25% mousetrapped the visitors, by not allowing them to leave the sites. Only 3% of the websites out of more than 14 millions adult sites requested adult permission for minors. Protect your child now!

Learning History At Home Schooling

October 2nd, 2010

Do you think that passing time in traditional classrooms is a waste of time? For some people, that is probably true. For example, an exam is due and the students are asked to memorize a lot of dates and names. However, after taking the exam, they will definitely forget 90% of those dates and names. That's what the majority of students do every time they have tests. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which concentrates more on the history of the world, will probably interest you more.

Simple memorization is not enough to know the importance of famous people and important events. Through home schooling in history, you can learn about the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way - your own way! Through the study of history, you will also understand the current situation of the world today.

If you think that home schooling is the most effective option for your child's learning, you should also be prepared to take on some responsibilities. Since there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to supervise your child's educational progress yourself.

Let's just suppose that your child is interested in a particular sport. Through combining history and home schooling, you can start by simply putting a map on the wall of your child's bedroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team's activities and schedules. Then, you could return to history lessons by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child follows. Apart from that, you could also study the history of that particular sport and discover where it started, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.

For instance, if your child likes baseball, you can teach your child about the history baseball, government hearings on the use of steroids and other favourite hobbies during that period in time. But remember that you can apply this method to any interest such as dancing, cars or any invention. You can also have conversations with your child about current affairs or read interesting historical documents and other books. Aside from that, you could also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use while home schooling, like TV, maps, newspapers, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Because of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is best when it is done in an interesting way.

These methods are recommended for when the child is still young, but once your child is older, you must choose an appropriate home schooling program that is suitable to his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You just have to search online for these different programs. A good thing about these programs is that you can tailor them to fit the needs of your child. However, you must ensure that all the lessons are followed by your child.

Once you and your child have decided to go for home schooling, you must be prepared for some changes to take place in your life. The learning environment will now be your home not a school and through the various resources that you can use including the computer and Internet.

How To Obtain Financial Aid For College.

August 28th, 2010

Education becomes more and more expensive as time goes by. For this reason, a great number of students are applying for scholarships and grants in the form of financial aid for college to supplement their income whilst in college.

Fortunately, there are already various routes to obtain financial aid for college scholarships to assist these students. The main providers of financial aid for college are the government, individuals, non-profit organizations and private organizations.

However, not everyone is familiar with the ways of accessing the information necessary for applying for this financial aid for college scholarships. Basically, the following are the possible methods you can use to find the ways of applying for financial aid for college scholarship:

Firstly, you can do a college scholarship search in the search engines like Google or Yahoo: just type in "college scholarships and grants" (without the inverted commas). Visit the free sites that link to financial aid for college scholarships search websites and databases. This tool is useful for the majority of people compared with other sources because most people probably already have a computer at home.

All you have to do is match your profile to any number of financial aid for college scholarships where you think you may qualify. Another advantage in using the financial aid for college scholarship search tools is that it is always current, which means that, you have access to the latest grants and financial aid for college on the Internet.

You could also try referencing other resources. You could enquire at the local community and civic organizations, as well as at police and fire departments in your area. They might provide financial aid for college scholarships as well.

Furthermore, most of the state government departments extend financial assistance to in-state students. Therefore, you could take advantage of local assets. Usually, the best financial aid for college scholarships is extended to students who excel in the fields of writing, science, math, music, sports and the like.

These methods of financial aid for college scholarships and grants do not usually require very high grades: a GPA of 2.0 will often do. They are commonly based rather on the students character, circumstances and his or her explanation of why the student feels he / she is eligible for the financial aid for a college scholarship or grant.

However, do not expect that you will get the full scholarship money simply by placing your name in only one or two particular programs. Keep in mind, that applying for financial aid for college scholarship or grants is a numbers game. So, it is best for you to apply for more rather than less scholarships and grants to be assured that you will be successful in one or more of them.

After finding your prospective scholarships in either of the above mentioned resources, you should find out the method of college application next. The following are the ways to ensure your success in getting a college scholarship:

Start your search early. The majority of the scholarships are open for a finite period of time only. The financial aid for college scholarship or grant will be closed after that time period for applications has closed and when that happens, you will have to wait for another year to apply. If you start your search early, you will not just be able to find the best scholarships, but you will also be able to apply for more financial aid for college scholarships, which will afford you even more chance of winning at least one of them.

Be very careful when reading the stipulations for that scholarship or grant. Remember, of the large amount of scholarship applicants, only a few will suit the the sponsor's requirements. So, read the required qualifications carefully and only go for those scholarships that you are elligable for. If a financial aid for college scholarships or grant does not suit your qualifications, do not even bother with it, try looking for another one.

Make sure you fulfill all the necessary requirements. When you make the application form for the financial aid for college scholarships, you definitely must already have to hand all the documentation required (eg birth certificate, driving licence, school records or whatever). It is not a good idea for you to wait for your prospective sponsor to ask you for proof of something before you know where it is. Most of all, submit your application for financial aid for college scholarships early, and work on the belief that you will be considered as one of the sponsor's students.
