What Should You Do With Credit Card Offers?

July 10th, 2011

The vast majority of us would rather not be without our credit cards. It is not so much that they are difficult to acquire any more, but they used to be and we still feel good about having them. They are also very helpful of course - it is like having an ATM in your bag, to which thieves and muggers have no recourse.

However, what about if you already have two or three cards that are maxed out? Is the proposal of a new card so appreciated then? It is a tricky question. On the face of it, we all know that the right reply ought to be 'no'.

However it is not always that simple, is it? After having enjoyed the convenience of credit cards, it is a cruel blow to have them confiscated.

There can also be decent factors for wanting a new credit card. What if the new card accepts balance transfers at an APR of zero percent for six months? That could save you a great deal of money if you are currently paying 20% on the total debt.

In fact, if you exercised total abstention from using the card recklessly for six months, you might be able to rescue your decent name from immanent tarnishing, because once you begin missing payments or are late a couple of times, that could affect your credit rating and the worse your credit rating, the higher the APR you will have to meet in the future.

It is a real shame that people, particularly young people, are not shown that one's credit rating is a very precious asset in its own right. If you tend, cultivate and take care of your credit rating from your first loan, you will be able to borrow a fortune in subsequent years at the very lowest interest rate because of your credit history.

There are a number of simple steps to doing this.

The first is always pay off your loans and never be late for or miss a payment. If you can see this happening due to an event beyond - really beyond - your control, warn the credit card company.

Secondly, use your credit card to pay for everything, particularly the large, one-off purchases, but pay the card off before the end of the month when the first payment becomes due. In other words, only use the card for a free short-term loan.

Thirdly, when you have been following these tactics for a year or two make a point of asking for an increase in your credit limit every year.

Fourthly, remain on the look out for special offers, but keep in mind that these offers are only for suckers. Use them to play the banks at their own game. Transfer balances to the lower APR cards if you are going to carry a balance. If you buy a car on the credit card, get a better loan to pay off the card, before you have to pay them interest at a higher rate,

Build up your credit rating as you would your personal reputation and you will discover that it pays dividends throughout your life.

Garden Patio Deck Layout

July 8th, 2011

After you have finished buying in your garden patio furniture and you have set it out as you like, it is time to park yourself in one of your new patio chairs with one of your favourite drinks and maybe a pen and paper, and take stock of the state of affairs.

Is your garden patio a little congested or do you have loads of room? Are there other things you would like to have out there? How about plants? Do you have enough plants and bushes - eye candy? Will you be using it only in the daytime or in the evening or even at night too? Will you need lighting, for instance?

This is where your own personal stylishness can be added to your shop bought furniture to make the patio truly your patio. So, if you live in a house that only has a small garden, you might want to think about things that hang rather than things that must be sited on the ground, which will take up walking space.

If you do not have much room, but you want to grow plants with edible fruit such as strawberries or tomatoes, you could get some hanging baskets. You can hang them from bushes or standard lamps or fix them to a boring wall. Similarly, you could grow herbs or other small flowers in a window box which has been fixed to a wall or placed on top of it. Or put shelving up and put boxes and pots on that.

If your patio is too bright, you could grow sunflowers or put up a trellis or an arbour and grow vines or clematis up it. Bamboo grows quickly too. If it is too shaded, plant plenty of bright yellow and white flowers and maybe paint the walls white or pink, if you are not keen on glare.

If your garden patio is a much bigger, you could add garden accessories in order to further your enjoyment. For instance, you could build a barbecue area out of stone slabs or bricks. You could add a fountain too. A fountain makes the very soothing sound of running and splashing water and fish are a delight to look at.

For the colder months, you could construct a fireplace, if local bylaws permit or get a patio heater. They are very efficient and can keep a fair radius warm, depending on the ambient temperature.

You will probably need some type of lighting as well, if you reckon on spending some evenings on your patio. I suggest a few spotlights to highlight your favourite flowers and the fountain and a broader beam light that you can read by. Do not put these lights near where you mean to sit because they will attract flying insects. However, they make a good distraction from you and will keep all but the blood sucking insects away.

For parasites such as mosquitoes, you should get some form of mosquito trap. Some are very good and promise to keep a quarter or even half an acre clear of mosquitoes and other such nuisances.

For all these extra accessories you will need power points. Therefore, if you plan your garden with pen and paper like I mentioned at the beginning of this article, then you will be able to show the electrician where you want the points and what-not in your new garden patio layout.

Learning Speed Reading

July 6th, 2011

What have you been reading lately? In a gathering, you can tell who the broad-spectrum readers are. Wide readers often think and speak well. They win the admiration, respect, and good opinion of others. After all, reading expands the mind. In fact, many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures of mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale of television.

Reading is primarily a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the setting of the detective thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pain that the main characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas introduced by the author in that self-help book you are studying.

Reading effectively helps you to develop an extensive range of vocabulary by reading different kinds of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.

The act of reading makes you more aware and more curious about new words. Some readers even like to employ 'the dictionary habit', which means that whenever they find a new word, they attempt to work out what it means from the context. If they cannot do this, they refer to a dictionary.

Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to different subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other forms of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too - a free by-product!

Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you have to make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and weigh the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.

Now let me introduce you to the idea of speed reading. All of the above applies three, four, eight, nine, even ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Imagine that ... being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your subject far more quickly than others. Just think how that could help you at work or in school or college ...

Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:

1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember that practice makes perfect. 2) Learn the habit of reading the main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate - the principal ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try to read faster. Give yourself a time limit for the specific article that you are reading.

Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You have so much to gain by discovering the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right this minute.

Are you interested in speed reading for yourself or a loved one? If so, please pop along to our website focusing on Speed Reading.

Expected Levels of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressure

July 5th, 2011

The real order that the numbers involved in a blood pressure reading are given is systolic over diastolic. The systolic pressure is higher, because it is the reading taken when the heart actually pumps or beats and the diastolic pressure is lower because it is taken whilst the heart sucks in a fresh quantity of blood to pump around.

There are approximate figures that people quote as 'standard', yet there is no clear, authoritative consensus what these numbers are. In the west, most authorities will say that any reading under 120/80 is good. However, there are numerous medical professionals who will say that 140/80 does not need treatment, other than to lose a couple of pounds, if you are over weight.

This makes it very difficult for the unqualified person to ascertain for him or herself, whether his or her blood pressure is satisfactory or not. Blood pressure monitors are very reassuring, very accurate yet not expensive these days, but how can you interpret the data they give you, if not every medical professional has the same opinion?

Perhaps the only way to get the most sense of this data is to go along to your general practitioner with your blood pressure monitor and talk about its findings with your doctor. Your doctor can use his or her sophisticated device and check it with yours then your doctor can give you a few figures that can be expected for someone like you.

I say this because there are a number of things that can affect blood pressure. In fact, actual blood pressure changes with every beat of the heart, so your blood pressure can be different every time you take it, which is why a BP monitor takes the average (or the maximum) over, say, a two minute period.

Factors that can (and often do) have an effect on blood pressure are:

The 'White Coat Effect': some individuals' BP soars by as much as 25-50 points if they go into a doctor's surgery. This could be anxiety or it could be fear of doctors, and it is a documented difficulty.

Mood: fear, anger, depression and anxiety can unsettle your blood pressure.

Age: your age has some sway on your BP.

Weather: the temperature and the humidity has an effect on BP

Stress: stress, restlessness, lack of sleep and tiredness can affect the levels of your blood pressure.

Diet: which foodstuffs and beverages you have recently consumed have an impact as do whether you are constipated or merely 'full'.

Smoking: smoking and drinking alcohol have an impact on blood pressure.

Exercise: your physical condition, your metabolism and the amount of exercise you take are also factors.

Time of the Day: for all the above reasons and more, the time of the day that you take the reading has an impact, which is why it is a good thing to have your own blood pressure monitor at home. Then you can measure your BP at definite times of the day and compare the results with the hoped for levels of diastolic and systolic blood pressure given you by your GP.

Collectable Anime Toys And How To Make Money From Them

June 27th, 2011

Are you an anime toy collector or do you only comprehend how well-liked they are? Well, the fact is that because they are so popular with both children and collectors alike, some individuals are earning a nice living out of trading anime toys both on and off line. Making money from your hobby is both fun and fairly easy, if you know what you are doing. It is certainly possible for you to profit from them too.

There are prerequisites to earning money from any hobby and trading in anime toys is no exception. You have to actually immerse yourself in the toys and know which ones are difficult to buy and which ones are the most well-liked with enthusiasts. You can acquire this knowledge by reading, yet to be truthful, if you do not already know it, you are probably not interested enough.

If you are not au fait with anime toys, try applying these principles to what you are interested in. Anyway, getting back to anime. There are comics, books and films that you should be familiar with before you can have enough information to begin trading. You have to know the characters and even their personalities.

The easiest manner to start is if you sell what you already have. If you have looked after them, they could be worth quite a lot of money otherwise they will attract a reduced price. This is not necessarily a problem. Sell all your old stuff but use that money to buy the most well-liked figures of anime toys that you can afford, but buy it 'as new' and boxed in its original carton.

The top collectors will only purchase 'new unused' in its original packaging, so this is the level that you have to aim for. Anything that is second best, unless it is very rare is a waste of time and is just good enough for children to play with. Real collectors only invest in the best - think of coins and stamps.

By selling off your used anime toys, you can achieve a few objectives: you will be 'clearing the decks' and also furnishing yourself with start-up capital. Often, it is a lack of start up capital that prevents individuals from 'having a go'. If it does not cost you anything other than your old toys, which I am certain you will have already grown out of, if you are considering dealing in them, you will not be speculating with your own money actually.

The way to begin is to sell your old stuff in order to get start up capital and then use your specialist knowledge to purchase anime toys that are only in the very best state. Then you work your way up the ladder until you are buying ang selling off line locally or further afield at toy fayres and on line, say on eBay, in just the very best examples of anime toys. Stick with it and you can earn money, if you are passionate about your niche.

Mosquitoes And Mosquito Bites: A Permanent Problem?

June 26th, 2011

Without doubt only the most dedicated of entomologists and the most fervent followers of Buddha can honestly say that they like mosquitoes. The others of us in the world loathe them. The word 'mosquito' comes from either the Spanish or the Portuguese and means 'little fly'. They live in most countries throughout the world and are or have been to blame for spreading various diseases throughout history.

Malaria is the sickness most usually connected with mosquitoes and at one time malaria was widespread in Europe. Even London was a malarial city until they drained the marshes to create space for more housing a couple of hundred years ago. Until a hundred years ago, malaria was not thought to be associated with mosquitoes, it was considered to be brought on by 'bad air' ('mal aria').

Mosquitoes are blood-sucking insects, or at least the females are, that are still to blame for spreading many diseases throughout the animal kingdom. That is correct! They do not just affect humans. Dogs in particular get a fairly hard time from mosquitoes.

For a large part of their lives, mosquitoes happily drink nectar from flowers like bees do, but while the female is pregnant, she needs animal protein to produce eggs. This is what she obtains from us and other animals. The male never has to drink blood.

It is when the female is drawing a little blood, that an infected mosquito involuntarily deposits a couple of parasites into the host's blood stream, which could cause infection with malaria, dengue, encephalitis or numerous other diseases that are spread by parasites.

Not all bites from infected mosquitoes bring about sickness. In the case of malaria for example, it has been contended that a healthy person can fight off the parasites injected by up to fifty mosquitoes in a twenty-four hour period. After that though, the parasites grow in number too quickly for our defences and get to the organs that they like to colonize.

When a non-infected mosquito sucks blood from an infected human, that mosquito can pass the parasites on to other non-infected humans. It is thought that most mosquito bites happen indoors when the person is sleeping. Therefore, the WHO and other agencies have been distributing mosquito nets treated with insecticide in Africa, where most victims of mosquito borne infections reside.

However, there is a concern that treating the problem in this manner might make some sorts of mosquito immune to the insecticide or might even raise the chances of being bitten outdoors. There have been comparable concerns in Cambodia. Until recently, it took three days of hospitalization to cure a patient of malaria, but in one area of Cambodia it now takes five days.

Doctors treating patients in that area say that this is a very disturbing development. It is thought that if this local development spreads, then it could result in the deaths of millions of Africans again.

Most mosquitoes do not fly far. Most mosquitoes never go over two kilometres from where they hatched out; some move only a couple of metres away, although others can fly some 5 or 10 kilometres, and a very few species will even fly up to 50 kilometres, assisted by the wind, from their pupal locations.

Tips For Dealing With High Blood Pressure

June 23rd, 2011

Gaining weight and doing less exercise is a characteristic pattern of life for middle-aged people of both sexes. When we are young, our metabolisms can handle most things we throw at it but we begin our jobs on the bottom rung and maybe even have a young family to take care of. This all burns up our calories fairly unsurprisingly.

However, as we get older our metabolism slows down; we may have a manager's position and our children leave home. This all has the result of calories being stockpiled on our waists and thighs. However, there are a couple of things that can be done about it, and it in essence boils down to taking more exercise and taking care of what we eat.

This normally has the effect of giving us hypertension, which is what most people call high blood pressure. The purpose of this article is to present some tips for dealing with high blood pressure. The fact is that if you do nothing about the condition, you will be taking medication for the remainder of your life.

That is OK, if you do not mind taking medication, but most people would rather avoid taking medicine each day.

So the first thing to do is moderate your weight to what it should be. If you do not know what this is, you will have to enquire of a dietitian or your GP. The handy thing about the majority of of the things you ought to do is that they are all connected with decent health.

For example, if you are flabby, you need more exercise and more exercise will also help lower your blood pressure. Two birds with one stone!

It does not take a great deal to make a big difference, if you do nothing at all now. Walking for thirty minutes twice a day will make a huge difference to your body if you do not walk anywhere now. Walking will have a knock-on effect. It will make you lose weight, it will lower your blood pressure and it will massage your internal organs naturally. Swimming works in a comparable way.

Reducing your consumption of salt is a useful manner of losing weight, yet you do have to seek professional advice on this point because salt is a key part of the human diet. However, if you eat too much salt (normally by consuming too much processed food), you can change the situation by using herbs and spices instead of salt to augment the flavour of your food.

Other facets of life that increase blood pressure which do you no use at all anyway are smoking, drinking to excess regularly and permitting yourself to become stressed out. Curing these three habits will have the impact of decreasing your blood pressure.

Taking any of these pointers for dealing with high blood pressure on board will enhance your life and decrease your blood pressure, but you may have to do all of them to get it down if you have a serious problem.

The Top 10 Reasons For High Blood Pressure

June 18th, 2011

The percentage of the populace in the countries of the West that is suffering from hypertension (aka high blood pressure) is rising all the time. High blood pressure is also called the 'silent killer', because there is no real notification that you have it, but it can kill you stone dead all the same.

Whenever people say that they can feel their blood pressure rising, it is normally merely an idiom meaning that they are getting angry or excited. You cannot know that your blood pressure is high without measuring it.

So, how can you reduce your blood pressure or stop it from going up without resorting to the daily ingestion of tablets? Here are the top 10 causes of high blood pressure.

1] The first thing to do is lose weight if you are too fat. Just losing ten pounds can have quite a significant impact on your BP.

2] Smoking is a cause of high blood pressure, so you could cut that out.

3] Drinking alcohol to excess frequently also raises BP

4] A desk bound lifestyle or plain lack of exercise will not help either. If you cannot bring yourself to go to the gym, only walk more. A walk of thirty minutes in the morning and in the evening will instigate a lot of difference.

5] Diet. It is important to eat a healthy diet, which will also help you lose weight. Cut out most junk foods; cut down on meats and greasy foods and eat more fruits and vegetables. Salt plays a big part in weight gain (through water retention) and is a major factor in hypertension. Reduce your sodium intake. (Junk foods have a high salt content).

6] Attempt to be happy. Easier said than done in most cases, but strive to develop a positive attitude. Stress plays a big part in developing hypertension. Exercise is said to alleviate stress as is meditation and yoga. Endeavor a few items and see what works for you.

7] Some illness and sleep disorders raise blood pressure as do some medications. Sleep disorders like sleep apnoea disrupt your sleep, preventing you from getting proper sleep, which increases BP as well. Sleep apnoea can be the result of being overweight, so you know how to deal with that, and if you think that medication is causing high BP, speak to your GP.

8] Age can be a factor and whilst there is nothing you can do about your age, you can attempt to be a 'young' whatever you are. People more than the age of 55 generally start developing hypertension rather than younger people. You could try to keep fit and optimistic. See exercise above.

9] Race is another aspect about which you have no control, and Africans and their descendants are more prone to hypertension. If you fit this profile, become aware that you are at risk so check your BP regularly.

10] Fear, worry and depression can all have negative influences on BP, so if any of these incapacitating conditions applies to you, seek help.
