Decor for Teen Rooms

July 19th, 2010

Teen rooms are the bane of mothers everywhere. It's not even like when they were younger. In those days, if their rooms were in a mess, you could shout at them and get them to tidy it up, and, barring that, you could go in and do a good job yourself. However, when it comes to teens and their rooms you're dealing with something whole different.

True, you could go and ask them to clean up their rooms. And yes, you could shout at them a little if you wanted to, and go and clean the room yourself. However, that's when all hell breaks loose. Teen rooms are sacred places and not to be entered into lightly.

Heaven help the person who dares to clean up even one inch of that mess on the carpet. It was there for a good reason and you had absolutely no right to move it. At least, that will be what most teens will argue, and you being the patient, caring mother that you are, will just roll your eyes skywards and explain that the pizza and three-day-old shirt thing just don't go well together and you were just rescuing them from impending disease.

And in their turn, your teens will roll their eyes and scream, that you should not exaggerate, it wasn't about to develop legs and walk off on its own, and if it was then wouldn't that make a fantastic science project. So, you keep cleaning and they keep putting things right back. And you end up right back to square one.

Of course, one way that you could deal with this bomb site is to redecorate it. Teen rooms might be sanctums to them, but even they would like it if you gave their rooms a great makeover.

That doesn't mean that the room will be any cleaner once they've moved back in, but at least you'll have seen the inside of the room long enough to tide you over for the next few years. That is unless you're thinking of redoing their rooms every year.

But now you come to your next problem. Since teens are notoriously different with regard to their rooms. You might find that your teen rooms are decorated very differently from that which you had expected and that which you would have done first of all. This is where a comprise ought to be struck, if your teen wants black walls for his room, then say you want another colour too that will brighten up the black.

Be prepared to give in a little on your ideas no matter how ridiculous their ideas seem. After all, they're only a teen for a while and later they will look back with horror on what bad taste they had.

As a parent it is your duty to give them these moments in their lives which they can look back on with due horror, and ban their kids from doing the same to their own teen rooms.

How To Buy A Computer For A Novice

June 22nd, 2010

As with everything else, purchasing a computer is straightforward if you know what you are doing. For those who do not know though, it can be a total nightmare. People who have had a computer before have a good idea about what they need and what they want, but for those who have never used a computer before, all the components that make up a computer can seem confusing.

The obvious answer is to buy the best that you can manage, but this still might puzzle some people, because the best is not always the most expensive. In the computer world, 'the best' usually means the biggest and the fastest.

Just to make it more confusing, 'the biggest' here does not always mean in size, but in capacity. The only large size that is important is the monitor. This is a quick rundown of how to purchase a computer and its components:

Before you buy a computer, think about why you want one. If it is for educational purposes: that is surfing the web and looking up content, you do not have to have more than a basic desktop computer. If you are constantly on the move, then you might require a laptop, or maybe cyber cafes will suffice.

This sort of machine is also ample for writing letters and emails and almost any kind office work. Top flight computers are only required by games players and exhibitionists.

Purchase a complete computer. That means acquiring a kit of: CPU (the 'computer'), monitor (screen), keyboard, mouse, speakers and printer. This way you will just have to plug everything in and off you go - you can be sure that they are all well-matched.

When you purchase your next computer, you can get all the components independently to get even better value for money or a system more precisely customized to your requirements.

Go for the largest screen, the fastest memory and fastest hard drive and the biggest memory (RAM) and biggest hard drive (gigabytes) that you can afford. You do not have to have a great deal of 'space' for normal office work or normal surfing, but if you get into downloading music or films, then memory soon gets eaten up, although you could always add a new external (plug-in) hard drive later, in necessary.

Make sure that you purchase a computer that is not too old, if you go second-hand. This is because you can up-grade computers for two or three years, but after that manufacturers change the casings and new components will no longer fit - planned obsolescence, it is called.

Get your computer from a well-known, reliable local store and ensure that it has a good guarantee. Computers do not often go wrong, but you do not want to have to send it half-way across the country and wait three weeks for it to come back. If you are in business, get two. Perhaps a laptop and a desktop and synchronize the contents of both so that you always have your information.

Following these guidelines will ensure that the computer novice gets 'enough' of a deal and an adequate machine that is fit for purpose without paying through the nose.

Ideas For Painting Walls

May 27th, 2010

Here you are then, standing in your new house! Its a bit of a mess though because the vendor was in a hurry to sell and had been in the middle of renovating. Still, you don't really mind that though, since it gives you the perfect opportunity to do your new house up exactly the way you want it.

But now you need to decide where everything goes and what colours will suit your rooms, but you still don't have any wall painting ideas.

So, you eagerly sort out your new keys and wander through your new house. The minute you step in through a door ideas assail you. That huge urn you bought a year ago would look fantastic in the corner, and you're pretty sure that your existing sofa set will fit in this other room. And you know the antique mirror table would look stunning in the hallway. The only thing you really get hung up on though are wall painting ideas.

You definitely don't want to just dab on a few coats of bland paint and be done with it. What you want is a masterpiece, something that you can look on with pride every time you see it. And, of course, you should be able to keep looking at it with pleasure for quite some time to come as well, so it shouldn't be too severe.

But where can you get some good wall painting ideas from, and how do you go about getting the wall painting done? There are a few ways that you could go about it. The easiest being if you have an artistic streak in you, then you could always get your wall painting ideas out of your head, so to speak and paint the walls as you see fit. Unfortunately, most of us aren't very artistic and we are hesitant to pick up a brush or roller and apply the first coat of paint without any guidance. In this case then, you will need some help.

You could start off by hiring a professional interior designer to help you decide what would look good or you could sit down and watch some DIY programs on the TV, where they show some pretty good ideas on what to do when decorating a house and will even give you some great wall painting ideas.

If neither of these options is suitable for you, you might just try going down to your local hardware store with fabric swatches and colour sheets of your most prominent pieces of furniture and enlist their assistance on stylish wall decorating ideas.

You might come up with a mixed bag of wall painting ideas with this last suggestion, but I found that it was the one that worked best for me and now I'm very proud of my slightly eclectic house. It reflects who I am just perfectly.

Bathroom Lighting Accessories

May 25th, 2010

There is a wide variety of lighting fixtures on the market and they make great bathroom accessories. The sorts of lighting include the soft touch and the highlights. It is up to you to select the right lighting to suit your bathroom. Keep in mind however that lighting contributes hugely to the environment.

Selecting your bathroom lighting: It just depends on your requirements and conditions. Some people will have physically-restricted lighting choices, because their wiring system is not easily accessible. Others may have a more flexible situation. Despite this, people can enjoy a wide choice of lighting to improve the atmosphere in their bathroom due to technological advancement. You can now select from different light bulbs and fittings to meet your needs, no matter what those needs might be.

How do I pick the correct style for my bathroom? When selecting a style for remodelling your bathroom, you ought to consider the range of fixtures and light bulbs. Lighting enhances the character of any room, which is something to keep in mind as well. If you have a problem with your eyesight, you may want to choose more powerful lights. However, if your eyesight is pretty good, you may enjoy fluorescent lighting, which is softer in nature.

Furthermore, you have the choice of mood lights, which help you to produce a relaxed atmosphere. Mood lights produce similar effects to candles. You also have the option of bright or gentle lighting. You should look into these kinds of lighting seriously, because they have a greater effect than other sorts of lighting. Oil lamps are still available as well. These soft, flickering lights create an old-fashion atmosphere, but even better still, lamps create an outdoor atmosphere.

How do I know which beam of light to use? Once you pick the style that you like, it is easy to work out the right width of beam you need. The different kinds of beams are the narrow beams, which are between 3 and 25 degrees wide and the wide beams, which are over 40 degrees. These beams are similar to floodlights. The forty-degree floodlight is in fact the preferred choice of most people.

What effects can you get from lighting? You can also pick your effect. Natural light is based on tone, texture, and colour. Florescent lights cast a blue-greenish or black-purplish beam. However, there is a wide array of colours available. Wall lights, which are lights mounted on walls, are pretty versatile too. similarly, ceiling lights are hung from the ceiling and there is a widearray of fancy designs there too such as chandeliers made of pure glass, crystal, plastic or whatever. Standard lights enable you to move the lamp anywhere you please. However, almost any light you pick can be modified further by the type of bulb you use.

You will find a wide choice of lighting on the Internet, including the fixtures to match. You have an advantage online, since you can view images of your selected lamps, lighting and fittings. Furthermore, you have the choice of other bathroom accessories to contrast or complement your new design. Ultimately, if you are clever about it, you can buy the items separately to manufacture your very own lights.

No matter what you are trying to achieve nowadays you have many choices. Whenever you are selecting bathroom accessories such as lighting and fixtures always consider what your bathroom is primarily used for first of all. For instance, it would not be a good idea to install a fancy standard lamp in a child's bathroom, you would only be putting your children in danger.

How To Decorate Kids’ Rooms

May 12th, 2010

If you're bored with the way your home looks one of the best things that you can do is to redecorate it. Not necessarily all at once of course, as this can lead to headache upon headache for you and is almost guaranteed to bring stress into your life when you really didn't need it. However if you start room by room, your redecorating project will become that much easier and simpler to manage.

The next stage is to decide which room you want to decorated first. It's not always an easy decision to make, but it must be done nevertheless. How about beginning by decorating the kids' rooms first as this will lead to a general mood of happiness in them and can even help you in the long term too.

Decorating kids rooms can be an enjoyable way to pass the time and also gives you the opportunity to bond with your children as well. There's no better way to get closer to your children than by getting down to their level and talking about things that interest them. Decorating their rooms might be the perfect way to do that.

But where do you start? If you've more than one kid you need to be careful about whose room you're going to decorate first, as things can get tense. Decorating kids rooms can be fraught with tension if you don't handle it delicately, so I've found that the best way to deal with it is to flip a coin in the air and have the kids call out heads or tails.

This method might not work however if you've got more than two children or more than two rooms to decorate. In which case I'd suggest you just wade in and start the whole decorating process at once instead of tackling it room by room.

But at least you're not doing the whole house and this way you encourage happier feelings amongst the children with no-one feeling that they have been slighted by having their room decorated last. What tends to happen when you're decorating the rooms with the kids' help though is that more paint gets splashed everywhere but where it should be. But then that was part of the reason you decided to start decorating the kids rooms and perhaps even their play areas first, wasn't it.

You'll be all the happier for at least starting on your decorating project and your kids will be happier for having their rooms redone, not to mention the sheer fun you'll be having whilst doing all this. This isn't of course to say, that decorating kids rooms isn't hassle or stress free.

On the contrary, you'll probably get a boatload more stress by the time you've finished, but at least you'll have had the satisfaction of getting closer to your children and seeing their rooms tidy for at least one day before they move back into them again.

Decorating Ideas for Inside the Home

April 24th, 2010

The coldness of winter has got hold of you and you're pfaffing around trying to decide what to do with yourself. You're snowbound and the only thing that you can think to do is sit in front of the fire, drink your steaming hot mug of chocolate and stare broodingly out of the window. The only problem with that is, you've already done that and you've have had your fill of fires, hot chocolate and brooding.

Now you're itching to do something different, so, you turn to the only comfort you have and switch on the TV. You're instantly captivated by one of those numerous shows about how you can do up your home. You find yourself flooded with decorating ideas: ideas on both interior decor and exterior decor.

So, you finally find yourself entranced by something that you would have dismissed earlier and jump out of your seat to get a pencil and notebook to write down all those great ideas. Before long, you've run out of room in your notebook and have to leave your comfortable chair to go get another one.

Before you get back to your comfy chair, you've made a quick detour around the house and have spotted many of the things that you've spent a lifetime trying not to see - the cracks in the bedroom walls, the patch of mildew in the bathroom, the paint chipping off many of the doors.

The list is endless and could go on for many pages. So you dutifully sit down, and alongside your notes on various decorating ideas on interior design and general refurbishing, you meticulously take down all the little things that need fixing, replacing or refitting.

The list covers more than even your second notebook can hold but you decide to stop there, because it's more than your arm can take to continue writing, besides you already have all the pertinent facts at your fingertips, so now you set about sorting them out into sections that you can easily follow.

No easy task that, when your decorating ideas, interior designs and room-by-room list of flaws is all jumbled up into one horrible pile. You then turn to the tried and true, age-old method of sitting on the floor and surrounding yourself with your notes in an attempt at finding some order.

When you eventually reach that sublime state of order, you sit back with a tired but happy smile on your face. The knowledge that you'll now have enough decorating ideas and interior design plans and less spare time on your hands during those long hard months of winter, sends a gush of contentment flowing right through you. After all, there's nothing like a job well done and the knowledge that next spring, your home is going to look nothing like its former shabby self.

Kitchen Decorating

April 19th, 2010

It's a Saturday morning and you're sitting in the kitchen waiting for your coffee machine to stop its cycle, so you can make that vital early morning cup of coffee. Nonchalantly, you glance about your kitchen and notice a fleck of paint missing from the corner of the door. It had happened years ago, but you never really paid any attention to it until now.

You continue to allow your gaze to stray and your eye spots a patch of mildew growing under the sink, then you see the ugly brown colour your ceiling has turned right above where the cooker is.

The paint is faintly off colour, and the lone wall-papered wall is beginning to look outdated and faded. You take a fortifying sip of your now-ready coffee and decide that some kitchen decorating is needed.

How do you go about it though? And how soon can you get into it? Now that you've finally noticed all the little bits and pieces of decay that you were quite successfully ignoring up until that moment, you can't wait to start your little kitchen decorating project.

However, that is where the crunch comes. Just how small do you want to keep your kitchen decorating project? Can you get away with just sloshing a fresh coat of paint on everything or will you need to go to the lengths of stripping the wallpaper off the wall, and finding out what had caused that mildew stain.

Sure enough, it all depends on you and your budget, but if you can spare the time, energy and money, you'll probably do better, in the long run. to get rid of all your kitchen decorating problems at once. That would include stripping the wallpaper, replacing any carpeting or rugs that you might have, and perhaps even sanding down your wooden floors if you have those. If you're going to do a complete job of kitchen decorating however then you'll also need that all important final coat of fresh paint to brighten up your kitchen.

You might also want to think about replacing those old lace curtains as they're also probably looking distinctly old by now. So, go on and splurge on your kitchen decorating project and replace the curtains and while you're about it, you might want to think of investing in a new stack of tea towels as well. It doesn't hurt to go all out when you can.

And when you're finally done, you can sit back and enjoy your new kitchen and remember that weekend morning that started it all off. You'll have no regrets whatsoever, since your kitchen decorating project has provided you with a better kitchen than you ever expected.

A feeling of contentment rushes through you as you bring your new coffee mug to your lips. Life just doesn't get any better than when you're enjoying the fruits of your efforts and labour.

Southwestern Home Decor

April 13th, 2010

So what exactly is southwestern home decor and how can you introduce it into your own home? Well, to begin with southwestern home decor reflects the southwest and all its best traits. Southwestern home decor uses colourful throw rugs, gorgeous wall hangings, and if you look hard enough, you can even find great kitchen accessories as well.

If you're considering introducing southwestern home decor into your residence, first of all, you have to determine whether it will fit in with your existing decor or whether it will clash badly. Almost all southwestern home decor involves bright, eye-catching colours and stunning designs and motifs.

So, if your existing furniture would clash with any of these beautiful pieces, you can do one of two things. First up, you could always just throw out all your old furniture and replace them with gorgeous pieces of southwestern home decor. Or you could just buy one or two pieces of the southwestern home decor range and match them carefully with your existing pieces.

Personally speaking, I would just love to replace everything I already have since there's some wear, but in the real world that's just not possible. For one thing it would just be too expensive, and for another I would rather not have to listen to a lecture from my mother about waste. I've discovered that you can get away from from your friends but not from your mother!

Besides, I'm also more than little relieved that I didn't give into my initial impulse and redecorate everything in a southwestern home decor style. Granted that it does look really nice, but sometimes I also like the peace and quiet that some of my other pieces of furniture bring to in me. Therefore, I have now come up with the perfect solution and have instead resorted to buying one-off pieces that attract my attention and sprinkling my home with those instead.

And I have to admit that its made quite a difference to the look and feel of my whole home. Expensive pieces of the more traditional furniture now sit quite comfortably with the more vibrant and stunning designs of my southwestern home decor. I've also got hold of a great throw rug for my bathroom floor and a beautiful set of bathing towels. My kitchen has a new set of southwestern motifs, and my foyer has the most amazing lampshade and statue in full view.

Though all of this might sound too much, I've found that this is the best way to bring the glories of southwestern home decor into my life, without going all out and renewing my whole house with southwestern decor and motifs.

After all, you only want to bring a splash of southwestern decor to your home, not the whole sheebang. Oh, and did I forget to tell you about the gorgeous tapestry I bought the other day? It's just perfect.

How To Buy Your First Computer

April 11th, 2010

It is far easier to buy your next computer than it is to purchase your first one, because those who've bought and operated a computer in the past already have an idea of what they require in a new computer, but those who are new to the computer world can easily become lost in the multitude of choices to be had.

The quick reply to "What should I buy?" is "the best". Of course that response is extremely subjective because "the best" to one person is not going to be the best to another. Our meaning of "the best" is the fastest and with the biggest memory, but even that can leave the computer newbie mystified. Here's a quick list of what the computer novice should do and why.

1. Purchase a computer that includes all the fundamental components. Every computer arrangement can be broken down into four major components: CPU unit, screen, keyboard, and mouse. For the novice, it's best to buy a computer that has all of these peripherals incorporated so that when it's taken home, assembling the computer is a uncomplicated affair of plugging the bits in where they belong. Save the individual purchase of these peripherals to those who have more understanding.

2. Decide what you'll use the computer for. If you want to use your computer for investigating the Internet, sending email, or performing straightforward word-processing or spreadsheet tasks, a computer with the basic components that we recently described plus a printer should suffice. If you want to use a computer to help with a career in multimedia however, you're going to need to increase your system with maybe a scanner, digital camera, tablet, or digicam as well for example. If you want a computer to help with a career in music, you might require a good microphone and array of loud-speakers.

3. Create a budget and adhere to it. How much can you afford to splurge on a new computer? Even though the cost of computers is declining, they can still be quite a large expense particularly if you want supplementary components as described previously. In addition, you'll have to figure in expenses for Internet access, maintenance, servicing, and insurance.

4. Begin comparison shopping and look for the fastest and largest. By quickest and largest, we mean the computer with the quickest processor, the fastest modem, the largest memory, and the biggest hard drive capacity. Even if you consider that you'll never require the amount of speed or space obtainable on the market today, it's important to have in case that you really do need that much in the future. Having such a large reserve will cut down on costs when the time comes to upgrade.

5. Stay with the better-known makes. Going off the beaten path with lesser-known makes is again an exploit for those who have more experience with computers. Although those better-known brands may be a bit more costly, the computer novice will appreciate the security of purchasing a computer from a shop that has a long history of building quality products, and that has the money on hand for fulfilling returns, trades, servicing, and guaranties.

6. Pick a good store. Once you have an idea of what you want in a computer and what kind of computer that you want, the only task left to do is to decide on the place where you want to buy it. There are many places, which embrace computer shops, online stores, auction sites and operated computer shops. For the computer greenhorn, we recommend buying a computer from a physical store. In a physical store, you have the opportunity to see the computer of interest itself and ask questions. New computer buyers will also have a store guarantee, returns, trades, and services.

These recommendations ought to give the computer newbie a handy start in choosing a quality computer for the first time and these suggestions apply to either Windows computers or Apple Macintosh computers. After taking these decisions and eventually choosing one that fits your needs, you can then venture into the spellbinding world of software - a world that is just as impressive as the world of hardware!
